Our Marketing Manager, Julie Ann Nepomuceno, doesn’t just talk the talk when it comes to Missing Middle Housing—she lives it! Julie Ann calls one of San Francisco’s rare, older courtyards home, exemplifying the vibrant, inclusive living that #MissingMiddleHousing fosters. Her personal connection to this housing type reinforces the authenticity and passion behind our work, showing how we’re not just advocates but also part of the solutions we champion. Bonus? Each cottage has an awning where residents hang hammocks—a reminder of not only the livability of cottage but the charm. #courtyardchronicles

关于我们
Imagine a place where children ride their bikes to school. Picture a community where neighbors walk to the corner grocery and meet at local parks and where urban spaces are interconnected through public transportation. Pair this ideal with an architecture that is rooted in the history, climate, and culture of a place. The result is communities where people of all ages, backgrounds, and incomes want to live, work, and play. Opticos has the experience and expertise to help you make this vision a reality, whether you’d like to create a building, a street, a neighborhood—or an entire town. Blending the best from the past with the most innovative ideas of the present, our multidisciplinary approach results in state-of-the-art projects that are contextually rich, architecturally solid, and aesthetically appealing. From designs for individual buildings to regional master plans, whether we’re making new neighborhoods or revitalizing old spaces, we create custom-made solutions that directly address the architectural, cultural, and sustainable needs of communities. In the process, we form lasting partnerships with clients. Opticos was named to B Lab’s 2013 B Corp Best for the Workers List, honoring the top 10% of all Certified B Corporations that have made a positive impact on their workforce. We became one of the first B Corporations in 2007, and one of 12 initial California Benefit Corporations in 2012.

#TBT This 2019 interview with Daniel Parolek provides a clear and straightforward explanation of Missing Middle Housing—what it is, why it "disappeared," and how bringing it back could help address the nationwide housing crisis. Although it’s a few years old, his insights are still highly relevant today. #missingmiddle #missingmiddlehousing https://lnkd.in/giAEBjtN

The post-WWII, auto-centric, single-family-development model no longer meets the needs of residents. Urban areas in the US are experiencing dramatically shifting household and cultural demographics and a growing demand for walkable urban living." https://lnkd.in/gVc598pR #missingmiddlehousing #housing #walkableurbanism AARP The Congress for the New Urbanism Opticos Design, Inc.

Join us in welcoming Julie Ann Nepomuceno as our new Marketing Manager! She brings almost a decade of architecture experience in residential, education, solar, and mixed-use projects, from concept through construction. Here is Julie Ann’s MyFive: What is your favorite city that you’ve ever traveled to and why? 1. I could visit New York over and over again and still discover something new. I've also spent a summer interning in Washington DC and could see myself living and thriving there. But I also feel like I haven't traveled enough yet to have a favorite city; there's still so much to explore beyond the US. 2. If you could wake up tomorrow having totally mastered a new hobby/activity, what would you want it to be? Basketweaving, especially with bamboo. I took a workshop earlier this year and absolutely loved it. I felt a mind-body connection that I never felt during decades of knitting. 3. If you had to live in a project that Opticos designed, which project would it be and why? RiverHouse looks like a great place to raise a family. The combination of redwoods, the river, and a large cottage court seems magical. 4. What building type do you live in and why did you choose to live there? I live in a #MissingMiddleHousing type, in one of six century-old cottages around a courtyard on a 50’ by 80’ lot! When I saw the listing, I thought it was fake; I had no idea there was a historic cottage court in SOMA. It is our oasis in the city. 5. Which three things would you want with you if you were stranded on a deserted island? Chocolate, In-N-Out burgers, and a stack of books.

From his childhood fascination with dinosaurs to his work here at Opticos and Missing Middle Housing, Roger Foreman has always been fascinated by life from the past and continually asks why certain things seem to have disappeared (hello, velociraptor). And, as Roger points out in his guest post for Emerging New Urbanists, zoning and development trends have also nearly made fourplexes and triplexes extinct. But, like a well-adapted species, these housing types are critical to urban diversity and it’s time to bring them back! https://lnkd.in/gU5XDiPR #MissingMiddleHousing #MissingMiddle?

Drew Finke compiled a?history of our work in Hawai’i?and the impact it’s had on current residents and communities, primarily on the islands of Kaua’i and Hawai’i. Each unique project was implemented with visualizations to show what change looks like in the community, community engaged planning, as well as feasible, incremental, context-sensitive solutions for island climate and geography.
