Duke is proud to invest in the future of Durham by supporting innovative education opportunities in our community. Congratulations to the inaugural class of students at the new Durham Early College of Health Sciences! The 99 rising 9th graders and their families were joined on Duke’s campus by representatives from Duke University Health System, Duke Community Affairs, Durham Technical Community College and Durham Public Schools to celebrate during the Signing Day event. Made possible by a transformative grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies, DECHS will create new opportunities for Durham high schoolers to pursue in-demand careers in healthcare and research at Duke and beyond.

Congratulations to the 2025 Duke University School of Medicine Strong Start awardees?Josh Parsons, MD/PhD, Lauren Covert, MD, Peter Hendrickson, MD/PhD,?Alexa Bramall, MD/PhD, and?Danielle Mebuge, MD! The Strong Start program supports early-career physician-scientists at Duke as they develop independent research programs. As of 2024, the Strong Start program has provided $7.4 million?to 41?Duke physician-scientists, and the scholars?collectively received?135 awards after starting the Strong Start program, which have combined for?$61.8 million.
