    I had the opportunity to talk practical AI and startup challenges with Alex, looking forward to hearing the podcast

    Selling AI software is still selling. Gotta get the basics right. I just interviewed Rob Christenson founder/CEO of a leading AI company selling to oil and gas (podcast episode coming soon!). Rob reminded me that whatever you're selling, sales is still sales. Even if it's AI. What does that mean? 1. Sell to pain! Customers don't buy anything just for fun. Even AI. They need to solve real pains. And deliver value. 2. Sell based on value! His product reduces emissions 40%. Customers don't care. They care that it increases profit margins x%. Sell on that. Emissions benefits are a byproduct (see what i did there?) 3. Have a pricing strategy. Heard an AI startup's pitch 2 weeks ago–their founder ended with "we don't know what to charge so it's $2500/mo for everything". WHAT!? Don't even know where to start. 4. Listen to your prospects more than you talk. AI stuff looks cool and demos awesome. But do you ask "Do you see yourself using this?" or "Would it solve X that you mentioned was a big problem for you?" as you demo, or your prospects will not see or articulate the value. 5. Focus on markets where you can win. Rob's company oPRO.ai focuses on oil + gas because the team has had a ton of success in that market. Easy to find and win customers. There are 10+ other industries they'll get to–but not now. Now they are focused. Nothing is different for AI startups–whether bootstrapped or even if you raised $100mm out of the gates, got to get the fundamentals right to succeed at #GTM.
