Every county in WA State is supported by Community Action. We've been here supporting our communities for 60 years. We provide opportunities for hard-working families, we employ thousands, we build bridges to other agencies and businesses and we LISTEN to each unique community's needs. #WSCAP

We’re grateful to work with people who value making a difference. ?? Last month, some of our Child Care Aware of Northwest Washington staff rallied in Olympia for Child Care Advocacy Day! Organized by the Child Care for WA Campaign, the group asked state legislators for affordable access to high quality child care for families and living wages and benefits for child care providers.? ? Our Whatcom Asset Building Coalition team also participated in the Statewide Poverty Action Network lobby day in Olympia last month. With other asset-building partners, they spent the day connecting with our elected officials like Rep. Joe Timmons, Sen. Sharon Shewmake, Rep. Deborah Lekanoff and Sen. Liz Lovelett to share the importance of financial wellness.

“As the years went by, I realized—everybody needs a friend.” One of our rock star volunteers, Ursula, was featured in a recent KUOW Public Radio story picked up by the Boston NPR station, WBUR. Give it a listen to find out how Maple Alley Inn brings hot meals and care to people who need it each week in Bellingham: https://lnkd.in/g9bXSN74?

This spring, our Whatcom Homeless Service Center and PeaceHealth will open the medical respite side of the Way Station so that instead of being discharged from the hospital to the streets, people experiencing homelessness will get the care and respite they need through health care and access to service providers. The showers and laundry part of the Way Station is currently open, run by Unity Care NW. Everyone deserves the dignity of being clean and we’re grateful to partner with folks making that happen!?

We’re grateful to be able to help people who are homeless get back on their feet. Check out the recent Salish Current story below!
Many factors have contributed to the rise of unhoused people in Bellingham and Whatcom County during the past couple of decades, including the slowdown of construction of new homes since the Great Recession, steadily rising rents and the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The high cost of housing in the region means many households are one medical emergency or job loss from becoming unhoused or housing insecure, said Greg Winter, executive director of the Opportunity Council?in Bellingham. “People may not know where they’ll sleep the next night, or they are unsure of how long they can stay where they are,” Winter said. “There simply aren’t enough homes available for everyone. We also need more safe, clean and accessible emergency shelters.”
