WHO WE ARE Over the course of our nearly 40 year history, OPN has grown from a handful of designers practicing in a single studio to nearly 120 talented individuals working in four offices in Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, and Iowa City, Iowa, and Madison, Wisconsin. As a comprehensive architectural, landscape, and interior design firm, OPN Architect’s solution-based process and approach is informed by data and rooted in a fundamental belief that detail and rigor inform every design decision. We thrive in challenging situations because our ability to build relationships between people, decisions, and information is central to our success. HOW WE WORK We collaborate. We camp out in teaming rooms during intensive periods of research and design. We document our ideas with layers of trace paper, sticky notes, photos and boards, and workshop ideas together during weekly design critiques. We understand that physical space can foster or inhibit collaboration and innovation, and we believe passionately that success lies in bringing people and perspectives together. WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT Responsiveness, responsibility, and commitment to open dialogue are our most important attributes, and we believe these commitments are the reason for our high percentage of repeat clients. Historically, those grappling with substance abuse or mental health crisis in Polk County have been transported to emergency rooms or incarcerated. Now, individuals facing addiction and mental health crisis will receive the care they need with dignity and humanity at the new Life Services Center, a public private collaboration between Polk County, Broadlawns Medical Center, and the City of Des Moines. It has truly been an honor to be part of providing a dignified place for those in crisis that can and will improve outcomes. #community #elevate #healthcare #opnarchitects

Congratulations to the City of Bondurant and Bondurant Emergency Services! The new Emergency Services Facility is the first in the community's new civic campus. As such the design needed to reflect the city's forward-thinking and innovative perspective while also providing a functional, efficient, flexible and durable facility for the fire and EMS departments to live and work. The facility also sets the tone for the city’s future civic projects by investing in an all-electric, NZE building that incorporates a geothermal system with an electric boiler for radiant floor heating at apparatus bays and a photovoltaic array that supports 100% of the building’s predicted energy need.

This project has been an honor to work on alongside the City of Des Moines, Polk County Behavioral Health & Disability Services, Broadlawns Medical Center, and DES MOINES COUNCIL OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY. A first of it's kind effort for the county, this private public partnership strives to improve mental and behavioral health crisis outcomes through intervention, deflection, & diversion. The new Life Services Center will improve the county’s crisis and early intervention response through deflection and diversion by: ? Reducing the stigma of hospitalization ? Providing relief to local emergency departments ? Offering nonviolent intoxicated clients an alternative to jail ? Providing treatment from a health and wellness perspective rather than a punitive one
Yesterday, members of the Broadlawns team joined leaders from the City of Des Moines, Polk County Human Resources and DES MOINES COUNCIL OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY, as they announced that Polk County will open its first-of-its-kind Life Services Center to provide mental health and substance abuse support for struggling Iowans. Located at 1914 Carpenter Avenue, the facility will house a walk-in mental health clinic, a sobering center, and a crisis observation center for people experiencing a mental health crisis. The sobering center is new, while the urgent care and crisis observation services will be moved from existing facilities at Broadlawns Medical Center and will double in size.
