Scammers are using Starlink to defraud innocent victims - and no one is stopping them. Scam compounds in Myanmar and Southeast Asia have trafficked hundreds of thousands of people, forcing them to run pig butchering scams that steal billions from innocent victims around the world. When law enforcement started cutting off internet access, the criminals found a new solution - Starlink. According to this article by WIRED, new reports confirm that scam compounds are using Starlink satellite internet to continue their fraud operations, despite laws prohibiting its use in the region. At least 40,000 different instances of Starlink being used at known scam compounds have been recorded in recent months. Despite outreach from law enforcement, anti-trafficking organizations, and government officials, SpaceX has not taken action to block these terminals. This is an international crisis. Operation Shamrock was co-founded in April 2024 by Erin West, a Deputy District Attorney from Santa Clara County, to take the fight against pig butchering scams to the scammers themselves. These sophisticated fraud schemes are run by transnational criminal networks, mass-producing financial and emotional loss for victims all across the world. The management is organized, sophisticated, and operating on an industrial scale, often with the tacit agreement of the governments in which they operate. Worse still, they are staffed largely by a human-trafficked workforce. Billions of dollars are being handed over household by household to bad actors. The human toll both to the trafficked victims and those who fell victim to the romance/investment scam on steroids is devastating. But we can’t bring global awareness to this tragedy alone. Compelling. Honest. Brave. Vulnerable. Inspirational. I spent an afternoon this week with Carina Peritore, PhD, who leads the Operation Shamrock victims team along with Kathy Waters. I was captivated by her recounting of victimization by #pigbutchering. Highly organized, sophisticated scammers literally brainwash their victims. They use classic techniques of isolation, gaslighting, and love bombing to upend the lives of so many worldwide. Carina reinforced what I know about those who fall victim in this way – – they are smart, kind people who are simply looking for what we all want — companionship. That desire is used against them as they are lured into schemes that divest them of all their money. But this woman persevered. She dried her tears and got to work, learning how to trace cryptocurrency and being her own advocate for change. And after a year, she’s even ready to resume her search for love.
