?? On the Agroecology Day in Italy, focused were on the environmental sustainability of agricultural systems.?? During the event, discussions were held on agroecological biodiversity, particularly genetic and species diversity. Experiments on wheat varieties for organic farming were presented, highlighting the benefits of intercropping and diversification at both the inter-specific and intra-specific levels, especially for weed control. The Centre for Agroenvironmental Research "Enrico Avanzi" (CiRAA) of the University of Pisa organized the 7th edition of the Agroecology Day. ?? ??We are grateful to everyone who joined us yesterday at the Agricultural University of Athens AUA OFC for an inspiring and insightful workshop on Agroecological approaches in crop and weed management! The event opened with a warm welcome from Associate Professor Ilias Travlos, who introduced the core principles of agroecology and highlighted their crucial role in sustainable agricultural systems. Following this introduction, Dimitra Petraki presented the One Green project , and Ioannis Gazoulis showcased the Decision Support System. Ms. Rizou from Cosmocert S.A. addressed the certification of organic products and the potential for implementing an agroecological certification. ? Olga Kriezi shared insights from the Oper-8 project, discussing the innovative strategies applied in the non-chemical weed management context. Nikolaos Antonopoulos and Fotis Deligiannis followed with an introduction to the Agroecology is GOOD project and its toolbox. Finally, Metaxia K. presented the VALERECO project, highlighting the ecosystem services provided by legume crops and their role in supporting environmental sustainability. ??A huge “thank you” to all our speakers and participants for making this event a success! ???? Our sister project Oper-8 organised a cross-visit in Sigulda, Latvia, on October 8-9, 2024. The main focus of the visit was a very exciting innovation - a cutting-edge robot designed for weed control. The robot uses a front camera to identify and target weeds with a laser, offering an alternative to chemical weeding. As part of the #FORTUNA project, Federico Leoni had the opportunity to present our work. Future prospects include adapting the technology for other crops and enhancing weed recognition capabilities. This collaboration between FORTUNA and OPER8 is a promising step toward reducing pesticide use in agriculture. Stay tuned for more updates!
