Great to see Maïwenn Kersaudy Kerhoas, Nick Leslie and team using the first-ever robotic pipetting platform at Heriot-Watt University to bring lab automation to the next generation of scientists! Their Lab Automation workshop introduced MSc and PhD students to hands-on assay programming and automation, giving them real experience with the Opentrons Flex. This is exactly the kind of impact we love to see—making automation accessible, collaborative, and educational. Excited to follow their journey as they continue expanding automation across research and industry!
Nick Leslie and I were lucky to be able to purchase an Opentrons Labworks Inc. Flex platform last summer with our #MicroSNARE EPSRC funding. The very first robotic pipetting platform at Heriot-Watt University! 🤖 🧬 🤓 🎉 Our intention has always been to share the platform with colleagues and students, beyond our lab. The reasons are pretty simple: 1) Sharing the resource means we can rapidly expand its capabilities by pulling our finances together 2) We believe students, especially those in the #lifescience industry (and to some extent pharma and some chemical industries) must understand the power of automation in their industry and acquire some hands-on experience with it! So, (thanks to postdoc Nathan Wu’s proactiveness) this week we had the pleasure of delivering our first Lab Automation workshop to a few MSc Toxicology students as well as PhD students at Heriot-Watt University. We wanted this to be a holistic experience, so during the session, participants learned the fundamentals of Lab Automation and its growing role in research, explored various robotic pipetting platforms, and got hands-on experience coding an assay and trialling it on the Opentrons pipetting system! It was the first of a series, and fantastic to hear the positive feedback! A big thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to making this workshop a success! Lab automation is transforming research and industry at a very fast pace — Colleagues Heriot-Watt University we will re-run this workshop – so please do let us know if you are interested. In January 3GENES successfully installed in Czech Republic another Opentrons Flex NGS robot (Opentrons Labworks Inc.) for the fully automated library preparation of our Twist Bioscience NGS kits in the Laboratoře Agel A.s. laboratory. In collaboration with SVEN BioLabs s.r.o. , 3GENES have customized Twist protocol (EF2 and hyb1) for this customer. NGS preparation is fully automated. Robot can do 8-72 samples in 1.5 days or 144 samples in 3 days. During February we will also start the protocol for the preparation of the kit from OncoDNA (OncoDEEP - tumor molecular profiling solution kit) for this customer. 3GENES offer complete solutions 😉
