In a world where differences often create barriers and inaction, two seemingly opposite individuals came together in pursuit of a common goal: Addressing the Dual Challenge. Our founders David Baldwin and Jeffrey Katz brought together their passion for energy and the environment to form OpenMinds. A team of unlikely allies: David Baldwin leads the firm’s energy transition initiatives at SCF Partners. During his time at SCF, David has supported the creation and development of multiple public energy service companies. During his previous career as an engineer with Union Pacific Resources, David was involved in developing and commercializing the horizontal drilling techniques that ultimately led to the US “shale revolution”. David’s civic activities in Houston include Greentown Labs, the Baylor College of Medicine, and the Center for Pursuit. He helped create TexE, a partnership between 5 Texas universities, MIT, and Greentown Labs to inspire and train future entrepreneurs and leaders focused on energy and climate innovation. David earned his degree in Petroleum Engineering and his MBA from the University of Texas at Austin. – Jeffrey (Jeff) Katz is a recognized leader in the travel and e-commerce industries with a passion for the environment. He was the founding Chairman and CEO of Orbitz, CEO of Swissair, President of the global travel reservation computer network SABRE, and a long-time senior executive at American Airlines. A veteran of start-ups, he also founded Journera, a machine-learning based software company aimed at making traveler journeys seamless. He is one of few executives who has also led companies in other industries, serving as CEO and Executive Chairman of LeapFrog Enterprises, a technology-based children’s product company, as well as CEO of the web-based comparison shopping company, Nextag. Jeff holds degrees from MIT, Stanford, and the University of California. Combining strengths for impact: To achieve success, David and Jeff knew they needed to build a diverse, non-partisan team willing to combine talents, people, and compromise. The OpenMinds network includes leading experts across influential sectors, allowing for a rigorous “peer-review” process. Meeting the world’s energy needs while reducing emissions requires an ‘all of us’ approach. By rallying diverse industries around a common goal, OpenMinds accelerates progress toward lasting change. Our partnership with Bain & Company enables us and our members to deliver impact faster. https://lnkd.in/enWcU9Y6

    Senior Vice President at Aon

In today's fast-paced world, collaboration is more essential than ever. When diverse minds come together, we unlock innovative solutions and drive greater impact than we could ever achieve alone. I witnessed this firsthand yesterday during a strategic discussion with OpenMinds, Inc. and the Women’s Energy Network Houston executive members about the Dual Challenge (affordable, reliable energy for all, with less emissions – fast). The exchange of ideas and perspectives was a powerful reminder of how collaboration fuels progress and fosters meaningful change. I ended the day with some friendly competition with the best Aon colleagues, all in support of the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation. Very grateful for opportunities like these that blend professional growth with community impact. Together, we can achieve so much more!

Partner at SCF Partners, Energy Service and Technology Investments Co-Founder of OpenMinds, Climate + Energy Impact (501c3)

We departed the 2024 OpenMinds, Inc. Impact Summit one week ago with multiple impact projects underway. Each is designed to affect key bottlenecks to progress against the Dual Challenge. ? I am deeply appreciative of each of the 100+ volunteer experts who have dedicated their time to this crucial work, and to OpenMinds, Inc.. Together, we are turning analysis to action, and our mission of advancing more energy, with less emissions – quickly – is becoming reality. ? Energy needs are growing globally, with climate impacts already apparent in our daily lives. It’s important to recognize that we haven’t even begun to “bend the curve” on global emissions – in fact, year over year, they continue to rise.?Yet in many areas of the world, citizens still lack access to energy to meet basic health and safety needs. ? That’s why we dedicated OpenMinds, Inc. to solving this “Dual Challenge”, and why we focused on projects with near-term impact. If we work together, it’s indeed possible to bend that curve, and to do so within the next decade. ? At our 2024 Summit, we worked to: Reduce power generation emissions, even while fulfilling steep demand growth; Connect the US grid to provide reliable, affordable, low-carbon energy to communities across the country; Support identification and development of the next generation of climate and energy leaders; and Communicate to accelerate our impact. ? One highlight of my weekend was time with members of our first class of NextGen Leaders. These extraordinary students will help us drive progress on the Dual Challenge into the future – and they are only the first members of a lifelong cohort that will expand with a new class every year. ? Limitless work remains, but I left the Summit inspired and excited about the potential for each of our impact projects. Each truly has the potential to drive?toward more energy with less emissions (fast!)? ? I am filled with gratitude for the OpenMinds, Inc. leaders driving this work, and to Bain & Company for their essential, and generous, support

The past year at OpenMinds was focused on a transition: from analysis to driving impact. ? Last weekend at our annual Impact Summit, we accelerated that work with our steering committee members, key topic experts, NextGen Leaders, and collaborators at Bain & Company. ? Since inception, the OpenMinds network has grown from 20 experts to 100+. We have prioritized the highest-impact Dual Challenge solutions. Now, our steering committees are driving impact projects to remove bottlenecks to more energy with less emissions – fast. ? This weekend, we advanced those projects, progressed strategy, challenged assumptions, and strengthened connections across our network – balanced between climate and energy leaders. ? We confronted realities: both climate and energy goals face a challenging outlook. We listened, learned, and worked together, focused toward action. ? Solving for the Dual Challenge requires all of us. We are grateful to each of our partners for their dedication to this crucial effort.

At OpenMinds, we are taking on the world’s biggest challenge: Climate + Energy. Affordable, reliable energy underpins health and economic growth. The developing world needs more of it? – more than 2 billion worldwide lack access to clean cooking fuels. The developed world will demand more of it – driven by data centers, EV sales, and increased air conditioning use. But – today’s dominant primary energy sources are also our largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions, which drive climate change. These emissions are already leading to an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather, in heat waves, and in sea level rise. And the more that we emit, the worse it will get. So: what do we do? Solving solely for emissions could jeopardize access to reliable, affordable energy. Solving solely for energy can worsen the impacts of climate change. Solving with 2050 pledges isn’t enough – we need impact this decade. We need: More energy. Less emissions. Fast. This is the Dual Challenge. This is what drives OpenMinds. Our partnership with Bain & Company enables us to deliver impact faster. https://openminds203x.org/
