Colombo, Sri Lanka – The UP Manila Standards and Interoperability Lab (UPM SILab), under the leadership of director Alvin Marcelo, participated in the 2024 OpenHIE Community Meeting held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from November 12 to 16, 2024. Open Health Information Exchange (OpenHIE) is a global community of people, organizations, and initiatives working together to improve health outcomes. The Regenstrief Institute supports this open and collaborative community as they implement their respective health information exchanges. Dr. Marcelo also joined the eHealth Leaders Forum (eHLF) composed of representatives from the government and key regional networks for digital health on November 14. The panel discussed their efforts in supporting and collaborating on HIE activities worldwide, alongside representatives from HELINA and RECAINSA. UPM SILab facilitated two sessions: “What is an Interoperability Lab?” and “An Introduction to FHIRLab” which Dr Marcelo co-hosted with Mr Umer N. from the Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO). The 2024 OpenHIE Community Meeting brought together experts and stakeholders to address critical issues in health information exchange, including: ??Interoperability and Architecture: Implementing countries shared their successes and challenges in building interoperable health systems ???? Operationalizing Interoperability: Sri Lanka showcased its progress in operationalizing interoperability initiatives. ?? Technical Innovation: The Technical Marketplace featured innovative solutions that support the OpenHIE Architecture and workflows. ?? Capacity Building: Academy Live sessions provided in-depth training on standards and implementation guide development. ?? Collaborative Learning: Unconference sessions allowed attendees to discuss specific topics and challenges related to their OpenHIE implementations. Other AeHIN representatives in OHIE2024 were Dr Rath Panyowat from Thailand, Dr Anis Fuad from Indonesia, Mr. Ramesh Subedi from Nepal, and Dr Chaminda Weerabaddana, from the host country. #UPMSILab4UHC #UPMSILab #OHIE24 #SILPH #OHIE24

Had an incredible experience at #OpenHIE24 in Colombo, where I had the privilege to meet global experts and innovators working on cutting-edge technologies that are shaping the future of digital health! The event brought together thought leaders and practitioners focused on improving #interoperability across digital health systems, including tools like DHIS2, OpenMRS, Open Function (OpenFn), OCL, OpenHIM, and many others. These solutions are key to ensuring seamless exchange of health data and improving service delivery, particularly in resource-limited settings. One of the highlights for me was sharing the work Ona has done with #OpenSRP2, a FHIR-native frontline tool that is transforming community health by making it easier to integrate clinical data across systems. We’re seeing firsthand how moving to #FHIR as a data model is empowering interoperability, making clinical data more accessible, and improving the quality of care. The conversations were rich and forward-looking, and it was exciting to hear about the ongoing work and upcoming integrations that will continue to shape the future of digital health. It’s clear that the momentum is building for a more interconnected health ecosystem, and I’m looking forward to continuing these discussions at future conferences. ?? Inspiring Week at the 2024 OpenHIE Community Meeting ?? I had the privilege of attending the 2024 OpenHIE Community Meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It was an incredible gathering of healthcare technology enthusiasts from across the globe, including policymakers, implementers, developers, and innovators. Over five transformative days, this vibrant event provided a platform to exchange ideas, showcase innovations, and delve deep into the future of health information exchange (HIE). The agenda was packed with a wide array of topics, from the fundamentals of HIE architecture and interoperability to cutting-edge discussions on AI, large language models, FHIR standards, and telemedicine. Sessions like the OpenHIE Architecture Summit and Academy Live offered valuable insights into scalable health systems, while the “unconference” sessions allowed participants to explore niche challenges tailored to their interests. The event also offered opportunities to learn from Sri Lanka’s journey in operationalizing digital health interoperability and implementing their Digital Health Blueprint. Engaging in the Technical Marketplace, which showcased initiatives aligning with OpenHIE workflows, was equally enriching. We truly enjoyed the Connect-a-thon, a hands-on exploration of privacy, security, and the OpenHIM platform. It was inspiring to witness collaboration in action as global experts worked on real-world solutions for implementing national electronic health records (EHR). What truly stood out was the strong sense of community. Meeting people passionate about improving healthcare systems, sharing ideas, and learning from the stories of different countries was an unforgettable experience. Hearing firsthand about successes and challenges in building scalable health ecosystems highlighted the immense potential of global collaboration. This meeting reinforced the profound power of collective effort. It was a reminder of what can be achieved when brilliant minds from around the world come together, not just to innovate but to make a tangible difference in healthcare. I’m excited to stay connected with this dynamic network and continue contributing to this global movement toward more connected, interoperable health systems.
