What an imaginative way to test and build knowledge about air pollution. Give it a try!
Are you a fan of Wordle??Well now get ready for Pollutle! Each day you can check on Pollutle and discover a new country's air quality emissions data, and see if you can guess whose it might be. The TD Enviro team pulled this game together in the last few weeks and we're thrilled to bring it to your screen!

We are looking forward to discussing the importance of this initiative at the session mentioned below. As noted, this letter remains open for signatures.
In two weeks at the World Health Organization's Second Conference on Air Pollution and Health, Clean Air Fund, OpenAQ Inc, and us at the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC) will be highlighting this letter on 'open-ready' AQ policies (linked below), signed by more than 200 organizations and individuals from across the air quality community. Thank you to many of you who have already signed. If you support the letter's message, please consider signing before the conference, if you have not already. If you are attending the conference and are interested in our session focused on this letter, check out the description below and please send me a message at [email protected]. There is limited space available. The letter, still open for signatories: https://lnkd.in/diSyW9Hq Our session at the WHO Conference - Maximizing impact of air quality projects through funders adopting “open-ready” policies: https://lnkd.in/dFkM4Zhi We hope to have additional formal and informal opportunities to discuss these concepts at other upcoming events this year, such as the European Geosciences Union (EGU) Meeting, the Air Sensors International Conference, and AirQo's Clean Air Forum.

Calling all air pollution people out there, many of you will know that the U.S. EPA Sensor Workshop was suddently cancelled recently. The?Community Air Sensor Workshop?was created to continue the critical discussions and knowledge-sharing around emerging air sensor technology. While the EPA event will no longer take place, our virtual workshop provides a collaborative space for experts, organizations, and community members to exchange best practices, explore innovations, and advance air quality monitoring. Through interactive sessions, hands-on workshops, and open discussions, we aim to empower communities with accurate, accessible air quality data—driving innovation and informed decision-making for a cleaner, healthier future. This event is?completely free?and organized entirely by volunteers who are passionate about advancing air quality monitoring and making sensor technology more accessible. Our goal is to ensure that knowledge and collaboration remain open to all. We appreciate the dedication of our organizers and contributors, whose efforts make this workshop possible. ???Event Dates and Time:?March 18–19, 2025, 10 AM – 2 PM ET (Tentatively) ???Location:?Online (link will be provided) https://lnkd.in/e5WPD_4m Spread the word..... As an organization devoted to sharing open air quality data on an open-source platform, we support researchers across the world and are pleased to be mentioned in this article on ways to overcome hurdles in enacting open policies.
Our recent Call to Action highlighted a key truth: fostering open research infrastructure is challenging, but collective action makes it possible. - Institutional inertia slows progress, but documenting successes—like KU Leuven’s reports—helps others follow suit. - Updating procurement policies to prioritize open-source solutions is a tangible step toward systemic change. - Local engagement, such as capacity-building workshops, strengthens open research ecosystems. We’re inspired by the work already happening! Do you have experiences or insights to share? Let’s connect: https://lnkd.in/dgkFQTbr

This is a tragic loss. Monitoring #AirQuality at U.S. embassies and consulates supports the health not only of the staff at diplomatic posts, but the health of the neighboring communities. In some countries, reference-grade monitors are the ONLY source of information on #AirPollution. They are also used to calibrate air sensors. Find historical Department of State air quality data on OpenAQ.
This tiny State Department program has had such a profound impact on my professional path. In 2012, Lodoysamba Sereeter and I became inspired by the Embassy monitoring program in Beijing to launch our own monitoring effort to share data with the public in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. I later joined the State Department through one of its many AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships and -- with many, many colleagues, proudly helped expand the program to other posts in 2015. Soon after, the effort was a direct inspiration for us launching the non-profit OpenAQ Inc to aggregate and harmonize global air quality data -- and the data from US Diplomatic posts were one its few sources in our early days. Amazingly, research* by Akshaya Jha and Andrea La Nauze has shown that the program actually lowered air pollution in the cities the monitors were launched. That finding has been a key source of inspiration for the EPIC Air Quality Fund, in which we support local actors to create and use air quality data to drive clean air action in data-scarce countries that receive zero to little air quality funding otherwise. I know I'm not alone in being so affected by this program. I've met so many people over the years whose air quality efforts were inspired by this small State Department project -- from researchers to entrepreneurs to citizens just trying to understand the air they breathe. If you've used this program, or it has inspired your efforts, I would find great comfort in hearing about them now, even if I have already. I mourn this loss greatly -- and I'm hopeful it could still be reversed. This line from the NYT piece is intriguing, the program won't share data “if/until funding for the underlying network is resolved." In fact in Jha and La Nauze's study, they also found that the program more than paid for itself, actually *saving* the State Department money in the form of lowered hazard pay through cleaner air for its employees. It would be the height of government inefficiency to see this program go away. https://lnkd.in/dntDHGuk *Jha and La Nauze's paper: https://lnkd.in/d4qD7SBp
