In our latest Insight, Alexis Cecil, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, explains the importance of reusing existing buildings and the benefits this approach can offer, from revitalizing neighborhoods to preserving community memory. As experts in transforming existing places, we help clients and communities uncover the hidden value in the built environment. Our work at Open Works Baltimore is a prime example of how building reuse can breathe new life into a neighborhood. By engaging with neighbors and future users, we created a space that has become a catalyst for positive change in Baltimore’s Greenmount West neighborhood. EARLIER: Made a benchmarking visit to Open Works Baltimore. An insightful Maker Space in Maryland. "How do you commercialize this work here?" I asked. Quite a number of ways, but outstanding one was "..target big money, go for contracts that require mass production." said April Danielle Lewis. At the time of the visit for instance, they were working on multiple solar powered charging stations" or "charging kiosks" to be installed across Baltimore City, for travelers to charge their electronic devices while waiting for transportation. The client being the City Authority. Another unique feature is their multiple "Micro Studios" setup at the hub, hirable to community makers. This is in addition to accessible Wood & Metal fabrication & textile workshops, 3D printing facilities, digital media studio, and more. In Uganda, (or to say East Africa), that place is MOTIV. Committed to bolster entrepreneurship and innovation within our creative communities.
