Networking isn’t about sending a one-and-done message—it’s about building relationships, and that requires following up. Here are a few tips to keep in mind: ?? Don’t take silence personally. If someone doesn’t reply immediately, it’s not about you! People are busy with overflowing inboxes and to-do lists. Instead of assuming they’re not interested, stay persistent to help your message rise to the top—both metaphorically and literally. ?? Build relationships before you need them. Networking isn’t about sending a cold email when there’s a job you want. It’s about finding your people early so they think of you when opportunities arise. ?? Make it a two-way street. Networking isn’t just about what you can get—it’s about what you can give. Share their posts, buy them coffee, offer leads, or simply show support. Little gestures go a long way. And remember: Follow up! Staying organized is key. Use a reminder on your phone, a “Follow-Up Friday” habit, or even a spreadsheet to track your contacts. Melissa Grabiner shared terrific networking advice in Open to Work this week including this gem: ?? “After networking, follow up with a personalized message. Keep your connections warm by occasionally sharing articles, congratulating them on achievements, or offering help.” ?? Tap into our network, meet other job seekers and get great tips from our coaches at www.opentowork.community.

Make Networking Work! This week in Open to Work, we’re all about networking. For some, it comes naturally. For others, networking—whether in person or virtually—can be exhausting. No matter which group you’re in, focusing your efforts and setting boundaries is key. The group in our How to Get Hired workshop shared three strategies to help make networking work for you: ?? Set Timers for LinkedIn – Being on LinkedIn all day can burn you out and take you away from “real life.” Set a timer—25 minutes to an hour—then take a break for some fresh air or an in-person chat. ?? Block Irrelevant Content – Don’t get sidetracked by clickbait or sales pitches. There’s a lot of dubious advice and negativity out there. Stay focused on what truly helps your job search. ?? Focus on Positive Interactions – Seek out people who are helping others, offering solid advice, or doing what you want to do. Focus on the smiles, not the smirks. Those terrific points didn't come from our coaches - but from some wonderful members of our community, Carrie Johnson, MA, Suz V., Dahlia Hanin - MA, CPC, ACC, Melissa Stepp and others. We have such talented and thoughtful Job Search Advisors in Open to Work! Samantha Shulman gave great advice on getting your resume noticed as well as how to let the recruiter know you're open to relocation. Her answer: DON'T be sneaky by leaving off your location. DO state that you are open to relocation at the top of your resume. Here's the rest of her insightful post: Recruiters and hiring managers review hundreds of resumes for every open role, so what's the secret to getting noticed? Here are three vital strategies: 1. Demonstrate your success & impact: don’t just list responsibilities—show what you’ve accomplished by using numbers to tell your story with proof. For example: - Project manager for an initiative to streamline new employee onboarding process, reduced number of tickets submitted before employee start date by 23% within 90 days - Closed 12-16 new logo deals per year, average deal size range from 50k-125k+ ARR, average deal cycle of 3-6+ months 2. Be immediately relevant: grab attention by tailoring your resume for the specific job. You can do this by aligning your job title [if applicable] and bullet points with the role [if you have 6 bullet points under each role, prioritize the most relevant ones on top] 3. Location matters: whether fair or not, being local can be a deciding factor. If you’re local, make it clear! If you’re open to relocating, state that explicitly at the top of your resume: “Open to relocation to [city, state of the role you're applying for] *Note - leaving a location off your resume does not trick recruiters into thinking you're local. TLDR: make it easy for recruiters/hiring managers to say, “This person is exactly what we’re looking for!” Looking for more tips and tricks from recruitment experts? ?? Here's another quick tip for crafting impactful resumes from our How to Get Hired workshop. Use the CAR method to craft impactful resume bullet points! ?? The CAR method—Context, Action, Result—is a simple, powerful way to transform your work experiences into standout resume bullets. Here’s how it works: 1. Context: Set the stage with a quick description of the situation. 2. Action: Describe what you did to address the situation. 3. Result: Share the outcome or impact of your actions. EXAMPLE ???? Instead of: "Worked on social media to improve engagement and increase followers" ???? Try: “Revitalized stalled social media channel by developing a targeted content strategy, increasing engagement by 45% and growing follower count by 20% within six months.” The CAR method doesn’t just say what you did—it shows the value you brought! ?? ?? Using data on your resume isn’t about “showing off”—it’s about showing you know. We’re sharing insights from our How to Get Hired Workshop, where this week’s focus is on resumes—and how to harness the power of metrics. When you include metrics, you’re telling potential employers that you understand how to measure success and apply data as feedback on your work’s impact. ?? Whether it’s engagement rates, revenue growth, or customer retention, these numbers aren’t just details—they’re proof you know how to make informed decisions and drive results. So, don’t be afraid to quantify your impact. Show them you know how to turn actions into measurable success. Sherlock Holmes was right! We need data (especially in our resumes). Daniel Space ????? is also right - it's OK to use data in your resume, even if you can't provide exact empirical proof for it. This is Resume Week in?our? How to get Hired Workshop and we're sharing top resume tips for everyone! One of the main reasons for using data throughout your resume is reinforcing your achievements objectively.?Take ownership of your past successes even if you weren't 100% responsible. Those reading your resume will realize that you aren't claiming sole ownership of the achievement, especially if you include language?like "Helped" or "Led."
