At Open School, we know that real educational equity requires both investment and accountability. That’s why we’re paying close attention to HB 2009/ SB 141, Oregon’s latest effort to improve school accountability and student outcomes. More funding for schools is critical—but funding alone isn’t enough. Oregon must ensure that every dollar invested translates into better instruction, stronger school leadership, and improved student success. Our framework for academic excellence, equity, and advocacy is built on the belief that: ?? Excellence: Every student deserves access to high-quality, evidence-based instruction. ?? Equity: Schools must provide evidence-based supports to ensure historically underestimated students thrive. ?? Advocacy: We must challenge systems and beliefs that allow achievement gaps to persist. This legislative moment is a critical opportunity to demand stronger accountability for student outcomes. Oregon’s students deserve more than just good intentions; the stakes are too high to leave the quality of education in our state to chance. We need evidence-based, results-driven action to ensure every dollar invested in our schools leads to real improvements in teaching and learning. As the legislature debates increased education funding and school accountability, one truth remains: money alone won’t fix what’s broken. Without a clear plan for improving instructional quality, school leadership, and student outcomes, we risk repeating cycles of underperformance. Other states have shown that achievement improves when funding is paired with evidence-based practices. Oregon must do the same— read more in my latest commentary with the brilliant Sara Kerr and Andy Saultz. Let’s ensure every student in Oregon gets the education they deserve—not just more money, but better quality schools, instructional materials, and better supports and improvements to teaching and learning. #EducationPolicy #Accountability #StudentSuccess #OregonSchools
