The October grocery sales are in, and it was a huge month, especially for the meat department. Beef had an outstanding performance, with a 7.5% increase in pounds sold, showing that it’s still a favorite for home-cooked meals. The October #grocery sales results are in and it was a MONSTER MONTH. The 5 weeks ending 11/3/2024 in Circana’s MULO+ universe found record sales for many departments, including meat, produce and deli, as the meal landscape remains home-centric. - The price per unit across all foods and beverages increased 2.2% over October 2023 and is 37% higher than in 2019. The typical Thanksgiving basket is 2% pricier than 2023 but 26% more than in 2020. - Red meat drove substantial pound and dollar gains for the meat department. Lamb (+11.5%), beef (+7.5%) and pork (+6.1%) all moved more pounds. In processed meat, bacon, hot dogs and dinner sausage contributed the 8.0% increase for meat in October. Sayko and Marjorie Proctor, MS for making the report possible. - Bakery sales remained subdued, though some categories bucked the trends with substantial growth, including donuts, croissants and cookies. - #Fruit had a very big month, with 6.9% growth in dollars and 4.9% in pounds. Berries, grapes and avocados were the biggest contributors to growth. PLOT delivered on the vegetable side where #cucumbers continued to astound, up 15% in pounds. Prepared meat, combo meals and pizza lead the way in gains. #Shrimp deflationary prices are starting to register with consumers, with substantial volume growth in fresh and frozen. Please welcome Hunter Sevigny-Smith, the new Director of Business Development at Open Range Beef! With 14 years of experience in the food and grocery industry and 6 years of professional sales expertise, Hunter brings a wealth of knowledge and hands-on experience to the team. Starting young, Hunter developed a passion for butchery, cutting full carcasses by age 11. Over the years, he has honed his skills at companies like Niman Ranch and DemKota. He even owned a small custom processing shop while becoming HACCP certified and pursuing a business management degree. An avid outdoorsman, Hunter’s love for the land and livestock matches his dedication to producing quality meat products. At Open Range Beef, he will play a key role in expanding the Raise American Pasture Raised line and other premium beef offerings. His deep understanding of the meat industry, strategic insight, and track record of success make him a valuable asset to our team as we continue to drive growth and innovation in the retail and food service channels.
