Today, on the first-ever World Day for Glaciers, we recognise their critical importance for all life on Earth. Across the world, these vast ice formations provide water for millions of people, regulate our sea levels, and support diverse ecosystems. They are vital for the stability of our planet – but they are vanishing. According to UNESCO, glacier meltdown threatens the food and water supply of 2 billion people around the world. Without urgent action to address the climate crisis and slow glacier loss, we risk disrupting the delicate balance of nature we all depend on. To support climate storytelling, we’ve filmed and gathered hundreds of powerful clips and data visualisations of our changing glaciers. Discover more: https://lnkd.in/e7wAPGjg ?? Our cities, home to more than half of the world’s population, are on the frontline of the climate crisis. New research from WaterAid of the 100 most populated cities reveals that 20% are experiencing dramatic shifts to extreme wet or dry conditions; while 15% of cities studied are experiencing an intensification of both extreme floods and droughts, known as ‘climate whiplash’. These climate shifts have devastating consequences for the health and wellbeing of urban communities. This includes displacement, instability, a lack of sanitation and access to clean water, and an increased risk of disease. Through our library, we’re filming and gathering content of the major challenges facing our cities and the solutions helping urban communities to adapt and build resilience. ?? Have you heard of the great whale conveyor belt? ?? Learn more in this short explainer film by Exeter Marine as part of their latest study, featuring clips from #OpenPlanet by The View South and Kyle Armstrong Roepke ??
With one of the longest mammalian migrations, baleen whales link spatially distant ecosystems through important nutrient transportation in their bodies - a process known as the great whale conveyor belt! ???? This new collaborative study, lead by University of Vermont and co-authored by Exeter Marine’s Luis Huckstadt estimated the movement of nutrients from gray, humpback, and right whale annual migrations, and found that these whales transport over 3,500 tons of nitrogen and more than 45,000 tons of biomass through waste, carcasses, and placentas. Researchers also found that these numbers may have been three times higher before commercial whaling, and highlight that recovering whale species could help restore the movement of nutrients by whales in global oceans, increasing the resilience of marine ecosystems. New to Open Planet: Explore Indonesia’s expansive oil palm plantations.??? Indonesia is the world’s leading producer and exporter of palm oil, with plantations accounting for at least 13 million hectares of land - a combined area roughly the size of Greece. While forest protection has reduced palm-driven deforestation, Indonesia faces the ongoing challenge of meeting global demand for palm oil products, while preventing a surge in deforestation and biodiversity loss. This latest collection of footage on #OpenPlanet by Indonesian filmmaker Nanang Sujana features aerial shots of plantations, as well as high-quality clips of orangutans, proboscis monkeys, forest landscapes and burning peatlands.
