Curious about what makes Open Door Preschool an educational non-profit? The answer lies in all the ways we support our village! Here are ten facts to Amplify our mission! 1. Inclusion We were Austin's first inclusive preschool. For 50 years, we’ve welcomed children of all economic circumstances, backgrounds, & abilities. 2. Helping Hand Tuition Assistance Fund Our tuition assistance fund ensures all children have access to high-quality education. Providing reliable child care allows families to work, support their families, and contribute to our local economy, which makes us all stronger. 3. Family CARES Program We offer wraparound services for our families, from emergency rent and grocery assistance to help with unexpected medical bills. Through partnerships with organizations like Austin Diaper Bank, we provide diapers, formula, & warm clothes to our village. Our Family Cares Program Coordinator, Leslie, works hard to connect caregivers with resources. Whether it’s helping families navigate toilet learning, transitioning to kindergarten, or applying for CHIP or Texas Workforce Subsidies, Leslie has the expertise to support our village. 4. Foundation Community Collaboration We collaborate with Foundation Communities to support families exiting homelessness. We know that stable childcare is key to helping families get back on their feet. 5. Foster Care Support We reserve spots for foster children so they have reliable care while their foster families work. 6. Play-Based, Child-Led Curriculum In a time when many preschools are pushing young children to unreasonable standards of rigor, we stand by what’s best for our students. Our focus on the power of play is backed by data showing it’s the most effective and engaging way for young children to learn. 7. Food Rescue Program In partnership with The Johnson Center & Whole Foods, we distribute over 1,000 pounds of food weekly, reducing food waste while feeding our village. 8. Occupational & Physical Therapy Through our Open for All initiative, we provide the supports that our students need to be successful. Whether that’s adaptive equipment, extra staff, or physical therapy, we make sure our kiddos can learn and grow to their full potential. We partner with occupational and physical therapy providers to build services into the school day, ensuring kids get the support they need. 9. Foster Grandparent Program We partner with Texas Health & Human Services to host Foster Grandparents, building meaningful intergenerational relationships. 10. NAEYC Accreditation Open Door Preschool was the first program in Austin to be accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), meeting the highest standards in early childhood education. We were also impressed with the support the school offered families in need of tuition help and emergency assistance. Our family, however, was lucky not to need these supports. Fast forward two years and another baby, a health crisis, and a job loss, we were that family in NEED. We were worried, overwhelmed, and stressed. Open Door helped to ease our burdens. Our family was able to receive tuition assistance for a year through the Helping Hand Fund.
