Open Arms Perinatal Services is an innovative nonprofit dedicated to providing strong community-based support for birthing people through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. We have provided services to pregnant people and their families in the Puget Sound area since 1997. The time around the birth of a baby is a transformational time for parents and is a tremendous opportunity to support families in getting the best start in life. Through doula care and lactation peer support, we achieve better health outcomes, strengthen parent-baby bonding and increase parental self-advocacy skills. Open Arms’ unique services include home visits beginning during pregnancy, attendance at the birth of the baby, and ongoing support. We provide referrals and early parenting education up to two years after a baby is born. We also provide home visits by trained counselors to support lactation. In all of our services, we carefully match clients to care providers from the same community whenever possible, and we have the capacity to work with clients in nine different languages. Our work is foundational for maternal-infant health and early learning efforts. Open Arms serves about 500 families each year, supporting and caring for families with low income at a pivotal time when the positive impact is most profound.

We are excited to announce our next Community Education Program opportunity: a scholarship for two community members to cover fees for preparing for and enrolling in the IBCLC Exam in May 2025! Before applications for the scholarship open in Feburary 2025, we ask all interested applicants to attend at least 3 of our programmatic offerings to become familiar with our staff and programs. We are proud to share a recent story from KING 5 News (NBC, Seattle) featuring Bastyr University Department of Midwifery Assistant Professor, Tanya Khemet Taiwo. The story highlights an analysis by Dr. Taiwo published in the Journal National Collaborative for Health Equity that finds a disproportionate lack of mental health screenings and care for Latina, Indigenous, and Black mothers and pregnant people. Dr. Taiwo's research is part of the Giving Voice to Mothers study by The Birthplace Lab at The University of British Columbia. Her findings emphasize the need for comprehensive perinatal mental health care, particularly for people of color. Every year, Open Arms recognizes someone in our community who has gone above and beyond in service of birthing people and their families with the Libin Egal Spirit Award. This award was created in memory of Libin Egal, one of our founding doulas and a dearly missed friend. With great joy, we announce Caellyn Everson as this year's Libin Egal Spirit Awardee! For over a decade, Caellyn has been a dedicated Open Arms birth doula who has served hundreds of families, dedicating over 1,000 hours to supporting them through labor.
