Heavy smoke obscuring visual satellite views during active wildfires presents a significant challenge for disaster management. In our work, FireGPT framework, we discovered that Capella Space's SAR data allowed us to assess damages in smoke-covered areas much more quickly. During the fire, dense smoke blocked visibility, leaving many homeowners in the dark about their property's status. Our findings revealed that in areas heavily obscured by smoke, many homes were only partially damaged rather than completely destroyed. Using a multimodal approach, it's possible to estimate the damages more accurately.
About a week ago, we witnessed devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. Several family members and friends lost their homes, and many, including our family, had to evacuate. It was a strange feeling, reminiscent of when I left Iran to come to the US; we had to pack all our belongings into one or two suitcases, gather our documents, and leave. Many people didn't even get the chance to pack. Nothing else mattered. One of our team members at OpalAi lost his house in the Palisades Fire, and many of my former colleagues lost their homes in the Eaton and Palisades fires. I have been working on wildfires for the past 4 years, starting my research at NASA's JPL, developing methodologies that utilize AI and other data modalities including hyperspectral imagery, SAR imagery, and weather conditions. After leaving NASA's JPL to work full-time at OpalAI, we won a grant from NASA's Ignite SBIR to create decision-making tools for wildfire management. In this project, we are working with NASA, as well as private satellite providers including Capella Space and Planet, to build a unique AI tool that allows fire managers to analyze the fire during the event and assess damages afterward. Additionally, our team in collaboration with UCLA Engineering is equipped with the latest scanning capabilities, able to scan large areas from mobile scanners as well as aerial methods. We are looking for partners to help us support the community and rebuild our city faster. Please contact us if you have any connections with California FAIR Plan or the City of Los Angeles that could help us in these areas to make homes return to normal faster. The following video is generated using data from SAR Capella Space, visual data from Planet, estimated damages from FEMA and Microsoft. We are using the state of the art in damage assessment and improving these results using our FireGPT framework but to improve the accuracy of the results we need hyperlocal data that could be generated using our mobile scanners. #LosAngelesWildfires #PalisadesFire #EatonFire #WildfireRecovery #CommunityRebuild #ClimateAction #DisasterResponse #WildfirePrevention #AIFireManagement #SatelliteTechnology #NASASBIR #OpalAI #ResilientCommunities #EmergencyPreparedness #RebuildLA

?? Lessons from the Franklin Fire: How Innovation is Shaping Wildfire Management ?? The recent Franklin Fire in Malibu highlighted the unpredictable nature of wildfires. In a surprising twist, a smaller wildfire just a month earlier unintentionally reduced fuel in critical areas, sparing neighborhoods like Malibu Country Drive and Pepperdine University. This ironic outcome underscores the importance of proactive fire management strategies like prescribed burns. At OpalAI, we’re leveraging cutting-edge technology to make wildfire management more effective. Through FireGPT, our Vision Language Model funded by NASA's SBIR Ignite program, we integrate high-resolution satellite data (e.g., NISAR, Landsat, Capella Space) with advanced machine learning to deliver real-time fuel maps and actionable insights for prescribed burns. ?? Key Benefits of FireGPT: Real-time fuel mapping for accurate decision-making. Advanced visualization tools for fire managers. Early detection and predictive modeling to mitigate risks. Collaborations with programs like FASMEE and partners such as the USFS validate our approach. As global warming continues to intensify wildfire challenges, it’s time to embrace innovative solutions to protect our communities. ?? Let’s work together to shape a safer future. Learn more about how technology and data are transforming wildfire management in our latest blog post. https://lnkd.in/gzRMC55p #WildfireManagement #Innovation #ClimateAction #FireGPT #NASA #TechnologyForGood

*** Satellite Companies: Help Needed to Map Malibu’s #FranklinFire **** Last night, we were forced to evacuate our home near Malibu as one of the largest wildfires in Los Angeles history burned less than 1,000 feet away. Over 1,800 acres were consumed in under an hour, and the fire has now reached 3,000 acres with stronger winds expected today—an alarming situation, especially since we’re far outside the typical wildfire season. It’s ironic that OpalAi recently received a NASA contract to research wildfire management, and now we’re living through the second major fire within 1,000 feet of our home in just two months. Fires like this in the middle of winter underscore the urgency of better tools and strategies to understand and manage these disasters. We are urgently seeking data sources for this wildfire. If your company provides satellite data or neighborhood-level fire data near Pepperdine University, we’re interested in collaborating and applying our AI expertise to analyze wildfire spread and behavior. At this time, we don’t even know if our home still stands. This deeply personal experience highlights how quickly natural disasters can strike, leaving little time to prepare or protect valuables. We escaped with just our lives, and blocked roads prevent us from knowing what’s happening on the ground. If you are a satellite company, please consider mapping this area. We are prepared to purchase relevant data and use it to support wildfire analysis and management efforts. Details on the Franklin Fire can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gHXz-c6V
