Why is workforce development so critical to the development of the Blue Economy? Restoring ecosystems and developing new skills is vital. Human capital is and always will be the foundation of a healthy, sustainable society. Thanks to OPB radio for highlighting our work with NorthWest Oregon Works. #BlueEconomy #WorkforceDevelopment

Sustainably ranching billions of purple sea urchin while regenerating coastal kelp forests and blue economy jobs.
关于我们
Oo-Nee Sea Ranch is on a mission to Build sustainable seafood supply chains and regenerate PNW coastal communities and ecosystems. We invest in underserved coastal communities here in the Pacific Northwest by commercializing regenerative species like sea urchin, kelp, and sea cucumber - while improving the health of our coastal ecosystems with sustainable jobs at the same time. OoNee is building a vertically integrated sea ranch that includes harvesting, ranching, and processing purple urchin that are proliferating by the billions along our coastal marine waters. Through the vertical sea ranch, we will bring a steady, dependable source of local seafood to both local and international markets - bringing with it a revitalization of critical maritime expertise, equipment, and capital to ensure a scalable food supply chain and ecosystem that is resilient in the face of climate change and its impact on our Pacific Northwest coasts.

This 'blob' was one of the first anomalies that got mainstream media's attention over a decade ago. Since then things have only gotten weirder. Our ecosystem is changing, and we need to find ways to adapt and help it, and in the process help our own societies adapt. #kelpforestrestoration #restorativeaquaculture

Thanks for Koen van Seijen and the regen podcast for giving voice to restorative aquaculture within the regen community!
A deep dive with Aaron Huang, founder of OoNee Sea Urchin Ranch, into the world of #seaurchin ranching and its connections to high-end fish #restaurants, many of which fly their sea urchins in from Japan. Over the past decade, a warm water blob off the U.S. West Coast has caused sea urchins to overgraze the #kelp forests, leading to a massive population boom of urchins, the collapse of kelp ecosystems, and the rise of countless “zombie” sea urchins—urchins that prevent the kelp from regrowing without dying themselves. Why should we care? Because this phenomenon is happening everywhere—whether it’s invasive species or extreme #weather events, #ecosystems are collapsing, and without smart intervention, they won’t recover. OoNee's solution is to harvest the sea urchins threatening the remaining kelp, fatten them up, and sell them to the growing market for high-end #seafood. What can we learn from this approach and apply to other ecosystems that are out of balance? This is part of the Regenerative Aquaculture series supported by The Nest Family Office. https://lnkd.in/gQdGQYUv
