Onward House is thrilled to announce that we have been awarded a $3,000,000 grant to build our new Community Center in Belmont Cragin! The Community Center will house an expanded Food Pantry and Rooftop Farm, a healthcare clinic in partnership with CommunityHealth, a pediatric clinic, an Illinois Welcoming Center for Immigrants and Refugees, and Adult Education classes. This project will help immigrants, children, and families in this community build lives based on dignity, health, and prosperity. The $3,000,000 was allocated for Onward House by Congresswoman Delia Ramirez as one of 15 projects in the IL-03 district, and the project has been made possible by The Reva & David Logan Foundation, our local elected leaders, our partner organizations, and the staff, supporters, and community members who come together in community and support. Founded in 1893, Onward Neighborhood House’s mission is to open doors to improve lives and uplift communities through educational, economic, and support services. ONH serves the Belmont Cragin (BC) Community Area, home to Chicago’s largest Latino population. BC and surrounding areas have become a “landing neighborhood” for newly arriving immigrants and those who have been forcibly transported by other states. The poverty rate in Belmont Cragin is nearly twice the national average, resulting in a scarcity of accessible early and adult education, food, healthcare, and other basic needs. The ONH staff is deeply integrated and engaged in the Belmont Cragin community: 92% of our staff are people of color, 80% of our executive leadership are Latino, and our executive leadership has served the organization for 20 years. Education and Development ? Early Learning (Belmont Cragin, Austin, and Home-Based Program) o Motor skills, problem-solving, communication, literacy, and social emotional development for over 200 children aged 2-5 o Critical after-school and summer learning opportunities for children aged 5-12 o Special education screening, IFSP and IEP support, and family support education o English-Spanish bilingual environment for accessibility to the BC community ? Adult Education o Professional skills development for over 800 adult learners annually o Classes on IT, computer skills, ESL, GED, citizenship, and business management Healthcare and Food Pantry ? Co-located healthcare clinic run by CommunityHealth for free primary care, labs, vaccines, and pharmacy for people without insurance ? Belmont Cragin Food Pantry distributes 5,000 lbs. of food to 250 families each week Illinois Welcoming Center (IWC) for Immigrants and Refugees ? Nearly 3,500 migrants served in YTD FY2023 ? 2,500 referrals made, 750 cases managed, and 250 crisis interventions, a major increase each year since 2021 ? All staff employed under the IWC are bilingual English-Spanish and immigrants

Thank you Civilian Office of Police Accountability for supporting our Health Fair this past weekend! Thanks to your support, we broke the all time record for largest Onward House event for the second year in a row over 930 participants at the event!
Today, COPA is at Onward Neighborhood House Community Health Fair in Belmont Cragin. COPA is giving out info on filing complaints & compliments towards CPD. Onsite there are vaccinations, school supplies, fresh produce, & community orgs connecting people to resources. #COPAInTheCommunity

I love a good ‘before’ photo in an expansion project. While they’re lovely to look back at once the project is complete, I find them to be a source of continued inspiration. This photo represents leading with possibility - a skill that is deeply necessary always and particularly during difficult times. A year from now I will stand alongside my friend and colleague Mario Garcia in this very spot and we will celebrate when possibility becomes actuality. Today was one of the biggest days of my career so far. I started the day at the press conference where Congresswoman Delia Ramirez announced a $3,000,000 grant for Onward Neighborhood House to build our new Community Center in Belmont Cragin. This is a massive win for our community and I will make another post to talk more about it. This evening, I was at WTTW/Chicago PBS to be part of a panel for Chicago Tonight: Latino Voices. We discussed the challenges that new immigrants are facing in Chicago, including the incoming 60 day limit on shelter stays and the barriers to self-sufficiency caused by the arduous process of obtaining work permits. Onward House staff were interviewed for a WBEZ article around the state of migrant shelters. We have caseworkers stationed in shelters every day, and they play a critical role in ensuring that immigrants are treated with dignity and respect. “There are ways to treat people,” Lizet (an Onward House Caseworker) said in Spanish. “We are talking about serving people. We [caseworkers] need to have a sense of humanity.”
