Announcing the release of a new publication: an in-depth Capacity Assessment report conducted under the #SWITCH2CE project. This comprehensive assessment, led by Circle Economy, focuses on micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in two critical sectors:? #Plastic packaging producers in #Morocco? #Textile and garment companies in #Bangladesh The publication is designed to inform and support the development of a targeted capacity-development program that offers technical assistance and training for enterprises in these sectors.? Key insights from the assessment include:? ? Identification of relevant circular economy strategies for MSMEs to pursue. ? Current levels of circular strategy adoption by companies. ? Key barriers (financial, technical, cultural) preventing strategy adoption. ? Significant drivers enabling companies already embracing circular strategies. ?? Ending Hunger is Possible: A Value-Added Income Approach In 2015, we committed to ending hunger by 2030. Yet today, 733 million people—or 1 in 11—still face hunger, and projections indicate that the situation could worsen by 2030. ?? The cost of ending hunger has soared: ? 2020: $330 billion ??2024: $540 billion Recent global challenges and underinvestment have added $210 billion to this total. While we produce enough food to feed the world, it often fails to reach those in need. Vulnerable populations still lack the means to access it. Although direct aid can provide short-term relief, it is costly and requires complementary long-term solutions. ?? Our new study outlines a sustainable path forward A powerful solution is to focus on income generation for those affected by hunger and poverty, through local value addition in the agrifood sector. By investing in increasing productivity and expanding local food production and processing, we can empower communities, enhance food access, and foster resilience. ?? On Monday, October 14, 2024, a significant milestone was reached in Morocco’s pursuit of a sustainable, low-carbon future with the official launch of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Green Hydrogen Preparatory Project. This event, held in Rabat, was presided over by the @Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development - Kingdom of Morocco, alongside UNIDO highlighting the country’s growing commitment to green energy transition. The workshop, which gathered key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, marked the first meeting of the steering committee and set the stage for the implementation of the preparatory project. The initiative is designed to accelerate Morocco's transition towards green hydrogen, particularly in decarbonizing the steel industry—a critical sector in the country’s journey to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 45.5% by 2030, as outlined in its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). This project aligns with Morocco's broader national strategies, including its Green Hydrogen Roadmap, positioning the country as a future leader in the global green hydrogen market. The workshop successfully validated the project's work plan and underscored the importance of capacity building among policymakers and industrial actors to ensure smooth implementation. A workshop focusing on "Developing an industrial policy for green hydrogen in Morocco" was held in the afternoon following the steering committee meeting, seeing the participation of several key stakeholders on sustainable development policymaking in the country. This first step reinforces Morocco’s ambition to become a hub for green hydrogen, bolstering industrial decarbonization and enhancing energy security, in partnership with international organizations such as UNIDO and the GCF.
