??Honoring Black History Month: Pioneers in Mental Health & Health Equity??
At Ontrak Health, we recognize the vital contributions of three trailblazers who have shaped the field of mental health and advanced health equity. This Black History Month, we highlight two pioneers whose groundbreaking work continues to influence how we understand and address mental well-being today.
Mamie Phipps Clark, PhD & Kenneth Clark, PhD – This husband-and-wife research team conducted the famous “doll studies,” which revealed the profound effects of segregation on Black children’s self-esteem. Their work provided crucial evidence in the Supreme Court’s landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision, helping to dismantle school segregation and pave the way for a more equitable society.
Francis Cecil Sumner, PhD – Known as the “father of Black psychology,” Sumner was the first Black man to earn a PhD in psychology. His work challenged racial biases in psychology and education, paving the way for future generations of Black psychologists and mental health advocates.
Their legacies remind us that mental health equity is essential to overall well-being. At Ontrak Health, we remain committed to breaking down barriers, improving access to care, and ensuring that everyone receives the support they need.
