We all rely on healthy oceans for a healthy, livable planet. BIG NEWS: One of the world's biggest plastic producers is signaling a welcome shift in ambition toward a stronger Global Plastics Treaty. According to @Reuters, the United States is now in favor of a more comprehensive stance in treaty negotiations, calling for a reduction in plastic production and the regulation of chemicals of concern — a change in tune from its previous focus exclusively on demand-side measures like waste management and recycling. While this is an encouraging sign, it's crucial that these commitments translate into concrete actions that have the power to effectively and urgently combat the global plastics crisis. As nations prepare for the next — and possibly final — round of treaty negotiations (INC-5) happening this fall in Busan, Korea, we need to keep up the pressure and hold leaders like the U.S. accountable to their promises. BREAKING NEWS!! ?? We have a new leader at the International Seabed Authority (ISA). Leticia Carvalho, a scientist, ocean champion, and UN diplomat, is the new Secretary-General of the ISA. She will take office on January 1, 2025. She defeated the incumbent Michael Lodge (who’s been criticized as a “cheerleader” for mining interests) with 79 to 34 votes. This leadership change is historic, as the fate of our ocean and planet is at stake. Whether or not #DeepSeaMining is allowed to commence will be determined by the ISA, which oversees FIFTY percent of the total area of the world’s ocean. Given the alarming trend of environmental degradation, we’ve been raising our voices and calling for a moratorium to prevent a new extractive industry in the OCEAN, of all places. If you weren’t aware, the ocean absorbs 90% of the excess heat generated by humanity’s CO2 emissions. Sustainable Ocean Alliance stands by the values of transparency, accountability, and science-based decision-making. We are hopeful that these values will be upheld and met by the new ISA Secretary-General. Breaking news from yesterday! In a remarkable discovery, scientists have uncovered that oxygen is being produced in the deep sea through a mysterious process linked to polymetallic nodules on the seabed, all WITHOUT ANY SUNLIGHT! That means that photosynthetic organisms like plankton aren’t the only oxygen producers in town. This finding could be monumental in the race to stop deep-sea mining —not only highlighting the incredible geochemistry at the bottom of the ocean, but also revealing just how much we still have to learn. With life on the seafloor likely depending on this oxygen to survive, we have yet another reason why we must #defendthedeep and end the proposed exploitation of this vital ecosystem.
