Water towers are vital components of urban infrastructure, particularly in cities with high-rise buildings. These structures essentially function as elevated, man-made reservoirs, effectively distributing water across various levels of the city and ensuring a dependable supply throughout the day and during power outages. ? Beyond their practical roles, water towers can also become iconic features of the urban landscape. They reflect the architectural and cultural essence of their surroundings, and support sustainable development and resilience in city planning. ? Are there any interesting water towers where you live? If so, this could be your chance to win up to 5 000€ in our Walk of Water: Water Towers contest. ? Deadline is 8th December, 2024. Winners will be announced in January 2025. Along the coasts of Zanzibar, seaweed farming is proving to be at the intersection of gender dynamics and environmental sustainability. As the third-largest global seaweed exporter, Zanzibar's farms are predominantly managed by women, who are reshaping traditional roles and achieving financial independence. However, the challenges of climate change are becoming increasingly evident, especially as rising sea levels threaten the seaweed industry. Innovations such as relocating farms to cooler, deeper waters are now essential to sustain both the community and the ecosystem. Discover the full story and the faces behind Zanzibar's seaweed farms in our latest photostory. When freshwater and saltwater mix, chaos may be on the horizon. ? This is the current reality of Italy’s Po River Delta. Home to vital agriculture and fishing industries, the area is facing an escalating threat from seawater intrusion. ? Rising sea levels and reduced river flow have intensified the “salt wedge” effect, raising salinity in the delta’s waters and impacting everything from rice farms to clam fishing. Land subsidence from past methane extraction has further lowered the region, making it even more vulnerable and exacerbating the situation. ? As fresh and saltwater boundaries blur, communities and ecosystems are at risk. Happy World Toilet Day! ??? Let’s flush away toilet taboos and talk about why toilets are actually critical for society and the environment ?? -?Access to toilets is important for public health as it lowers the risk of disease transmission. This is especially relevant in the context of densely populated cities and urbanisation. -?Safe toilets help to ensure dignity and privacy, particularly for women and girls. In doing so, toilets also reduce the risk of assault and violence. - Properly managed sanitation systems help prevent pollution entering our waterways, preserving our beautiful ecosystems. So, toilets are more than just something convenient – they are a fundamental part of healthy communities and clean environments. This World Toilet Day, let's commit to advocating for better sanitation facilities everywhere. Because everyone deserves a safe place to do their business! Who said water towers couldn’t be in the ground? ? Lake Kariba, found along the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, is the world’s largest artificial lake by volume. It stretches over 223 kilometres (139 miles) in length and reaches widths of up to 40 kilometres (25 miles), with a massive storage capacity of about 185 cubic kilometres (44 cubic miles). ? Its immense size and storage capacity means that Lake Kariba supports people and wildlife in countless ways. For instance, it provides water for communities, powers one of Africa’s largest hydroelectric dams, and sustains a thriving ecosystem rich in wildlife and fisheries. ? As part of our upcoming photostory contest, we invite you to explore and capture unique water towers like Lake Kariba—whether they’re in the mountains, in the ground, or somewhere in between. ?? ? Deadline is 8th December, 2024. Winners will be announced in January 2025.
