Between 2022 and 2023, the number of people in families with children experiencing homelessness in Massachusetts increased by an alarming 29%. This statistic is simply unacceptable. At One Family, we remain committed to preventing family homelessness and breaking the cycle of poverty. Through our academic, career, and financial coaching programs, we help Massachusetts families achieve long-term housing stability and financial independence. According to the Massachusetts Rehousing Data Collective, over 45,000 people experienced homelessness statewide in 2023. This number includes adults and children, those who were sheltered in an emergency shelter, Safe Haven, or transitional housing, and those who were unsheltered (on the streets, in cars, tents, and other places not meant for living). Sadly, it's important to note that this statistic undercounts people experiencing homelessness, as it does not include those living in 'doubled-up' or overcrowded residences. At One Family, we believe that prevention-focused policies and programs that promote education and career opportunities are key to breaking this cycle. According to the Boston Indicators' recent report on homelessness in Greater Boston, the majority of unhoused individuals in the region are part of family units. In 2023, people experiencing homelessness were more than twice as likely to be in families than to be individuals. Of the estimated 12,674 people experiencing homelessness in the region that year, 70 percent were in families. This is a stark contrast to national trends, where about three-quarters of the homeless population are individuals. However, this figure likely undercounts family homelessness, as it does not include families living in 'doubled-up' or overcrowded residences. At One Family, we believe that prevention-focused policies and programs that promote education and career opportunities are key to breaking this cycle.
