At multiple companies, I’ve pitched brand new ideas that I believed in wholeheartedly and so many of them were shot down. I would see an opportunity or witness a pain point that I thought I could solve in a new, innovative way and I would pour myself into the research, storytelling, and building the pitch on my own time to convince an executive leader to take a chance on me. I’ve had a few wins where I had leaders and colleagues who trusted me and who were willing to take a risk on one of my crazy ideas. But, there were many more times where my pitch was declined, ignored, or not taken seriously. For a long time, I took that rejection really hard because I believed in it so much, and it felt like it was a rejection of me. I would be so offended and hurt by whatever leader shot me down, and I often found myself so discouraged and resentful about innovation within a company. Then recently I heard Huba Rostonics speak about innovation within organizations and a light bulb of understanding went off. He talked about this concept of a “corporate immune system” when it comes to innovation, and it immediately resonated with me. It’s such a great metaphor for understanding the opposing forces within a company of driving conformity and systems vs pushing the boundaries and innovating. I understand that not everyone’s crazy idea can be green-lit, but the other extreme where systems and scalability reign supreme and innovative thinking gets smothered isn’t the right answer either. What does it take to have the right balance of a “corporate immune system” when it comes to innovation within a company? What do you think?
