The gang at one5c has got a fun slate of panels at #ClimateWeekNYC this year, all about how saving the planet by saving our devices (from the landfill). Registration is right this way (and FREE!) ?? Hope to see y'all if you're in town! https://lnkd.in/ezVScZCG

Are you going to be at #ClimateWeekNYC? If so, come hang out with one5c on Tuesday, September 24! https://lnkd.in/ezVScZCG We're putting on a killer program at the Nest Climate Campus. We've partnered with Back Market to bring together a group of heavy hitters to discuss how our use of personal technology impacts the climate crisis. This isn't a shame-on-you moment. In typical one5c fashion, both our panels are focused on progress and opportunity; and then iFixit and Back Market are going to lead a series of demonstrations that will help anyone learn how to fix their own tech, which leads to longer service life and lower personal emissions. I'll be there, as will Corinne Iozzio, Back Market's Thibaud Hug de Larauze, iFixit's Kyle Wiens, New York State Assemblymember Patricia Fahy, WIRED's Julian Chokkattu, Google's Nicole Azores, and Gay Gordon-Byrne from Repair.org - The Repair Association. I told you it was stacked! Come hang out! (It's free.)

Today is a big day at one5c. We published our first product review. No big deal? BIG DEAL: No other publication is doing product reviews like this. They don't exist. TL;DR this is the first comprehensive, pro-level review you'll read that puts as much work into evaluating a product's sustainability as to rate its performance. Because people don't just care how good their blender is anymore; they care how GOOD the company that makes the blender is; they care how that blender was produced, and what it was made of; they care what happens to that blender when it dies. This is crucial information that wasn't readily available to consumers until today. (There's another coming next week.) Massive, massive (massive) props to Corinne Iozzio, who once again proved that she is the best of the best, confidently steering a tiny team of three into a content lane dominated by giants. I also have to express some deep gratitude to Lizzie Horvitz, who brought her significant experience and expertise to bear for our sustainability ratings. I've been an admirer of her work for years before I reached out to ask for help with this project, and that admiration was justified. She rules. Everything at one5c is an experiment until it's not; despite the amount of work that went into this story, we're only going to continue to do product reviews if our audience likes them. We're lucky to have a large-enough, engaged-enough family of subscribers who can give us signal on this potential direction. If they like it, well, look out, giants. I posted the online version of the newsletter below, so you can see how we messaged this to readers. Check it out, and make sure to subscribe if you haven't already. We're reviewing reusable storage bags next week, and you won't believe which ones are the best ?? . https://lnkd.in/drsHKvby

Last week, we had a small company offsite. You know how these go: Brainstorm for a couple days, everyone has homework. One of my tasks is to post about why I started one5c, something I have actively avoided doing. I don't like posting about myself. It feels thirsty and fake. I prefer to celebrate Corinne and Sara Kiley's work, how they've 7x'd the newsletter list in mere months. Or how, along with Gabriella and Liza, they launched our terrific sustainable eating newsletter, Cool Beans. I'm stalling. Here's the short version: In August 2021, I flew cross-country to a fancy car show. A couple days before my flight, the first section of the 6th IPCC Assessment Report dropped. I read the 32-page executive summary, and, like many others, couldn't stop thinking about it. Then, waiting to board my flight, I downloaded the entire 2,000-plus-page report; I spent the entire plane ride devouring it. I read it in the car to my hotel. I read it in my hotel room. I couldn't stop. I'd been a science and tech journalist for 20 years; I understood the danger of the climate emergency. But this was the first time I'd encountered it in such stark terms. More importantly (for this story), it was the first time I'd read something like this as a dad. At breakfast the next day, colleagues and I wargamed a meeting with an important auto exec. Out of nowhere, I blurted "the only thing that matters is the environment." My mouth seemed to move on its own, some tendril of my lizard brain playing puppets with my tongue. My colleagues gave me the "Donny, you are way out of your element" look and kept talking. I didn't care. I just kept thinking about the environment—and the irony of this event: literal smog-belching cars on an unnaturally manicured golf course that might, in my lifetime, end up underwater... due in part to the emissions of those very vehicles. I thought about how I'd have to hurry to show my daughter how the gnarled cypress trees cling to the sharp edges of the Northern California coastline. I wondered where the coastline would even be when she was my age, or if people could live there. I thought about how much she and her generation would have to endure just to survive the world we were leaving them. And I decided to do something about it. Media is the only thing I know how to do, so, on the flight home, I started working on a new media project. One that, instead of trying to scare us all, would inspire us to action. Once home, I called Howard Mittman, and asked him if I could run it by him. He said it had legs. I started working on my exit plan. The rest is pretty typical startuppy stuff: meetings. Reporting. More meetings. I've spent the past few years learning about sustainability in public—and that can be humbling. But the other day my daughter asked me what I do when I'm at work. I droned on about writing and editing and inking partnerships, and then she asked, "and doing that is going to save the world?" And I said yes.

Take it easy on yourself this holiday season. Individual climate action has got to be a marathon rather than a sprint—which is why I give myself a hall pass to eat some less-climate-friendly food this time of year. This kind of behavioral tweak might seem insignificant, but it’s not. Which is actually the whole damn point of one5c. https://lnkd.in/eG__RK36

New world-saver just dropped. Welcome to the one5c team, Sara Kiley Watson! Our first Associate Editor is, in the words of EIC Corinne Iozzio, "one of the sharpest and most knowledgeable environmental reporters around." You’ll be hearing from her a lot about sustainable living and greenwashing, but she also knows plenty about energy—and this week she’s breaking down the hype around “clean hydrogen” to help parse if it’s really the game changer some folks would have you believe it is. Read her first newsletter as Associate Editor: https://lnkd.in/eya8Q_KH #newhire #one5c #greenliving #hydrogen #cleanhydrogen #cleanenergy #sustainability
