No shortage of crises in these first 60 days but the wholesale collapse of health systems poses an enormous threat to our ability to control drug resistant pathogens - both TB and non-TB bacterial pathogens but also malaria and other parasitic infections. Where this will lead, no one knows, but we can safely assume that it won't be good, and will potentially roll back decades of progress on containment of infectious diseases. Many of us are alive because of this progress, and every single one of us is a stakeholder no matter which country we live in. My comments in this Devex piece by Catherine Davison.

Actionable research to improve health and well-being worldwide
关于我们
We live in an interconnected world: the health and well-being of the environment, animals, and humans are intertwined in ways that are increasingly more apparent. Tackling today’s greatest challenges—climate change, pandemics, unstable food systems, and drug resistance—requires an approach that recognizes these relationships. The One Health Trust (OHT) uses research and stakeholder engagement to improve the health and well-being of our planet and its inhabitants. For 15 years, OHT researchers have executed vital research and initiatives on major global health challenges, including Covid-19, antimicrobial resistance, hospital infections, tuberculosis, malaria, pandemic preparedness and response, vaccines, medical oxygen shortages, and noncommunicable diseases. OHT’s mandate includes issues related to climate change, biodiversity protection, the social determinants of health, and the effect of changing human diets on the planet. At OHT, we believe that answers to the world’s most critical questions lie between disciplines. Accordingly, our researchers employ a range of expertise—from economics, epidemiology, disease modeling, and risk analysis to clinical and veterinary medicine, geographic information systems, and statistics—to conduct actionable, policy-oriented research. OHT has offices in Washington, D.C., and Bangalore, India, with researchers based in the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Our projects lead to policy recommendations and scientific studies published in leading journals. We are experienced in addressing country-specific and regional issues as well as global challenges. Our research is renowned for innovative approaches to design and analysis, and we communicate our work to diverse stakeholders.

It's not often that a book about tuberculosis hits #1 on The New York Times Best Sellers list in its first week. Congrats to John Green on his smash success with Everything is Tuberculosis! We are elated that this book is bringing awareness to the ongoing TB crisis and the rise of drug-resistant TB. We are also happy that we were able to talk to John on our latest One World, One Health podcast episode about the book, what drove him to write it, and the strange history and devastating persistence of the world's most deadly infectious disease. This week’s digest covers an article that shows how social media influencers can be leveraged to help raise awareness about the HPV vaccine and encourage more people to get vaccinated. A mixed methods study determined that working with social media influencers in Nigeria led to increases in awareness of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine from 50 to 80 percent, vaccination rates among eligible girls from 30 to 50 percent, and willingness to recommend the vaccine from 50 to 60 percent among social media users. Notably, this effort did not mitigate concerns about the HPV vaccine’s side effects, which likely requires more targeted communication and support from experts. This week’s digest includes an article about how cuts to U.S. international aid funding affect global health—especially in countries with limited resources. In January 2025, the United States government issued an executive order to halt foreign aid for a minimum of 90 days and a stop-work order which led to the effective dissolution of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The sudden suspension of programs, such as the President’s Malaria Initiative and the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, threatens lives in countries with fragile health systems and severely limits U.S.-based global health research and programming. Without reliable funding from the United States, low- and middle-income countries must accelerate efforts to build regional capacity and promote local political will to fund national health initiatives and global health work. It’s #WorldTBDay! This World TB Day, tune in to our One World, One Health podcast with Dr. Jeffrey Tornheim from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, as he explains why tuberculosis (TB) is so hard to fight and how genomics can make that fight a little easier. TB has been around for ages, yet it remains the world’s deadliest infectious diseases. Delayed diagnosis and incomplete treatment allow the disease to worsen. It also gives TB bacteria a chance to mutate and become resistant to multiple drugs, making it harder to treat. Undiagnosed and untreated TB patients can unknowingly spread the infection, fueling new outbreaks. Dr. Tornheim’s research focuses on developing more accessible tests to detect drug-resistant TB, ensuring patients receive the right treatment immediately. Tune in as he explains how early and accurate diagnosis helps prevent the spread of these dangerous infections and saves time, money, and resources by avoiding ineffective treatments. For World Tuberculosis Day, find out why TB is still one of the deadliest infectious diseases. Despite being preventable and curable, tuberculosis (TB) continues to claim over 1.25 million lives every year. In our latest One World, One Health podcast, bestselling author, John Green, discusses TB and the urgent need for accessible and affordable treatments. Drawing from his new book, Everything Is Tuberculosis, Green shares the story of Henry Ryder, a young man he met in Sierra Leone, to highlight the barriers to TB care, from high treatment costs to weak health systems and policy failures to poverty.
