Vaccines Save Lives—And Help Fight Drug Resistance! ???? Childhood vaccines prevent 4 million deaths every year, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But their impact goes beyond preventing infections—they also play a crucial role in reducing antimicrobial resistance. By preventing illness, vaccines decrease the need for antibiotics and antivirals, lowering the risk of bacteria and viruses developing drug resistance. OHT explored how vaccination can help slow the spread of drug-resistant infections. Our report highlights the far-reaching benefits of vaccines, not just in combating AMR but also in boosting economies, especially in low- and middle-income countries. OHT’s Dr. Erta Kalanxhi led the team behind this report. Tune in to this episode of our One World, One Health podcast. Erta discusses how vaccines can prevent the rise of drug-resistant germs. Actionable research to improve health and well-being worldwide
关于我们
We live in an interconnected world: the health and well-being of the environment, animals, and humans are intertwined in ways that are becoming increasingly apparent. Tackling today’s greatest challenges—whether climate change, pandemics, or drug resistance—requires an approach that recognizes these relationships. The One Health Trust (OHT) uses research and stakeholder engagement to improve the health and well-being of our planet and its inhabitants. For more than a decade, OHT researchers have conducted vitally important work on major global health challenges, including Covid-19, antimicrobial resistance, hospital infections, tuberculosis, malaria, pandemic preparedness and response, vaccines, medical oxygen shortages, and noncommunicable diseases. OHT’s mandate includes issues related to climate change, biodiversity protection, and the effect of changing human diets on the planet. At OHT, we believe that answers to the world’s most critical questions lie between disciplines. Accordingly, our researchers employ a range of expertise—from economics, epidemiology, disease modeling, and risk analysis to clinical and veterinary medicine, geographic information systems, and statistics—to conduct actionable, policy-oriented research. OHT has offices in Washington, D.C.and Bangalore, India, with researchers based in North America, Africa, and Asia. Our projects lead to policy recommendations and scientific studies published in leading journals. We are experienced in addressing country-specific and regional issues as well as global challenges. Our research is renowned for innovative approaches to design and analysis, and we communicate our work to diverse stakeholders.

OHT’s Dr. Ramanan Laxminarayan and Dr. Arindam Nandi co-authored an article which is the first to estimate how anxiety and depression are passed from one generation to the next in India. Using data from approximately 4,000 parent-child pairs in India, the researchers found a strong link between parental and child mental health. These findings highlight the long-term benefits of mental health interventions, showing that improving mental health in one generation can break the cycle and lead to better outcomes for future generations. The rise of science denial is hitting the U.S. and beyond, with a major focus on vaccines, leading to the return of preventable diseases such as measles, especially in places like Texas. Dr. Peter Hotez MD PhD Hotez, a long-time advocate for neglected tropical diseases and affordable vaccines, is fighting back. His books, "Vaccines Did Not Cause Rachel’s Autism" and "The Deadly Rise of Anti-Science", tackle vaccine misinformation and the dangerous political and commercial forces behind the anti-science movement. Dr. Hotez, Dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, has become a prominent defender of science, facing personal attacks along the way, especially with the rise of anti-vaccine rhetoric under the U.S. Trump administration. In this episode of One World, One Health, Dr. Hotez reflects on how he never imagined becoming a "cartoon villain" while simply trying to help prevent the spread of disease. Our newest working paper led by Justine Hervé from a long term study of adolescent health is th first to provide estimates of intergenerational associations in mental health for a low- and middle-income country. In simple terms, depression and anxiety are highly correlated across generations but with significant heterogeneity- while minimal symptoms of anxiety and depression in parents persist into the next generation, children of parents with mild to severe symptoms experience significant improvements in mental health. Improving mental health in one generation can benefit future generations when it comes to mental health and related outcomes. One Health Trust Jere Behrman Subha Mani Arindam Nandi

On last week’s episode of One World, One Health, Dr. Peter Hotez MD PhD of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine explored the growing wave of anti-science sentiment, particularly in the United States. Science is grounded in systematic inquiry and evidence-based methods and is necessary for improving health and well-being. However, misinformation and politically driven attacks on scientists are threatening public health. Dr. Hotez highlights how vaccine misinformation and anti-science rhetoric have contributed to unnecessary COVID-19 deaths and a measles outbreak in Texas. He also shares his efforts to combat misinformation and advocates for science-based policies, greater public engagement, and stronger collaboration between academia, industry, and the private sector to support scientific research and protect global health as cuts to federal funding in the United States continue. We know where Lesotho is. OHT researchers and collaborators have developed the National Medical Oxygen Grid (NMOG)—a cutting-edge platform to optimize medical oxygen supply and manage demand fluctuations across a healthcare system. Already rolling out in multiple Indian states, NMOG?will soon expand to the southern African nation of Lesotho, strengthening global healthcare resilience. Learn about the importance of ensuring access to medical oxygen everywhere in the recent report from The Lancet Group Global Health Commission on Medical Oxygen Security, which includes OHT's Dr. Ramanan Laxminarayan: https://lnkd.in/dxn_eyTd Find out more about NMOG here: https://lnkd.in/d-iRrFca Listen to our One World, One Health podcast with OHT's Dr. Varun Manhas.
