Rosemarie started her professional journey in the United States Air Force, serving as an F-16 Tactical Aircraft Maintainer stationed in Aviano, Italy and deployed to Bagram, Afghanistan. A passion for anthropology took her across the globe during her undergraduate education, followed by a career development in the field of clinical research. Today, she is the Clinical Trial Manager for our CEPI-funded DDvax Rift Valley Fever vaccine project. According to Rosemarie: "The One Health Institute has provided an incredible opportunity to advance my career in global health research. It’s been a fulfilling place to grow, allowing me to merge my passions for research, public health, and international collaboration in ways I never could have imagined."

OHI's Dr. Christine Kreuder Johnson joined UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine's Dean Mark Stetter, Dr. Ashley Hill, and Dr. Angel Desai to answer key questions about #avianflu at a recent University of California Health Grand Rounds. “We are now in a new, much more complicated scenario for H5N1,†Johnson said. The wider #H5N1 spreads among animals and the more times it jumps from an animal to a human, the more chances it has to mutate into a form that could spread between people. “Human-to-human transmission would, of course, facilitate the type of rapid spread that we saw in the pandemic most recently."

#ThrowbackThursday ft. Catherine Lo Catherine joined the OHI team by way of The SeaDoc Society, a key program conducting and sponsoring vital scientific research in the inland waters of the Pacific Northwest. Her journey to her current #OneHealth career began with her love of animals and being in the water. This love took her across the country and across the globe seeking out every opportunity she could find to get more experience in veterinary research and marine ecology. In 2018, she first crossed paths with SeaDoc Society science director Dr. Joe Gaydos at the 2018 Wildlife Disease Association conference, where she introduced herself and shared her contact info. Fast forward to today, Catherine is 2.5 years into her time working on research projects with the SeaDoc team. Her advice for aspiring professionals: "Some of the best advice I’ve ever received is finding a good mentor or peer(s) that will support you and your life goals. This career can be harsh at times, so surrounding yourself with a supportive network will help you see your worth, stay true to your values, and push you in the best way possible. Learn the hard skills (e.g. statistics, GIS, scientific writing) AND the soft skills (e.g. problem solving, team building, communication). Get involved and build your network as much as you can. Many skills are transferrable so try your best to think outside the box. Everyone’s journey is different so walk up to that person even if it seems scary, learn to own up to your failures, be open to new things, be enthusiastic, and find joy in what you’re doing." #ThrowbackThursday ft. CVET's Ashley Patterson Ashley Patterson is the Associate Director of Operations for the California Veterinary Emergency Team (CVET). She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Washington State University and her Master of Public Health from the University of Minnesota in 2019. Prior to veterinary school, Ashley earned a bachelor's degree in Emergency Administration and Planning, and worked as an emergency management and planning consultant for Witt O'Brien's starting in 2010. Following graduation from veterinary school, Ashley worked as an emergency veterinarian in a variety of hospitals and volunteered as a disaster responder. Her advice to aspiring veterinary students: "It takes more than one try for so many people to get into vet school - took me two tries, and I know many people that it took three or four tries. So if you really want it, just keep improving, gain new experiences, and keep applying. Also - make connections! In addition to taking advantage of clinical opportunities, take the time to make connections in the field of work you want to be in, and explore what those options are. Go to the conference, introduce yourself, ask questions, get contact information, and follow up. Having those connections matter, especially if you're interested in anything outside of a day-to-day clinical position.â€
