People sometimes scoff at pictures of poorly merchandised stores. It's equally easy to dismiss things like locked-up merchandise or consistently long lines at registers. However, these things matter because they ultimately help determine where people shop. When the economy is robust and spending growth is surging, it's easy to overlook the impact or poor operations as defecting shoppers and lost spend are replaced with relative ease. That isn't the case in a tighter economy, which is one of the reasons we are seeing some shabbier results from companies like Target. Basically, their missteps in many areas of execution are coming home to roost. The diagram below is from some research we did with One Door on the cost of poor merchandising. Almost half of customers abandoned at least one trip during 2024 because of this. I also chatted with Fortune about the matter in the context of Target's results. In today’s fast-paced #retail environment, effective #visualmerchandising is critical to driving in-store sales. However, according to a study conducted by GlobalData Plc and visual merchandising software provider One Door, a staggering loss of $125 billion in the #USretailsector is due to poor merchandising practices. This loss is attributed to unsatisfactory displays, confusing store layouts, and hard-to-find products. According to the study, nearly 50% of consumers have exited stores without making their intended purchases due to poor visual merchandising. A striking 73.4% of shoppers expressed dissatisfaction with the in-store displays they encountered in the past year. This issue leads to a significant 3.3% annual loss in sales for brick-and-mortar outlets. Here are the key findings: 1?? Mid-market stores face the biggest impact, with chaotic displays and elusive products leading to a loss of $54 billion in revenue. 2?? Discount shoppers show just a 51.5% chance of revisiting stores with substandard merchandising. 3?? The most common frustration? Hard-to-find products (33.3%) and disorganised displays, which continue to frustrate a significant number of customers. Neil Saunders, Managing Director at #GlobalData, comments: “#Consumers today are time-poor and have little tolerance for messy displays and hard-to-find products. #Retailers that neglect visual merchandising are driving customers to seek alternatives, including online shopping.” The findings show that visual merchandising is more than just aesthetics—it is a vital part of the customer experience and a key driver of revenue. Retailers need to take this seriously or risk losing customers to competitors, including online retailers.
