Our visit to Bulgaria took place as part of the validation process for a regenerative agriculture project under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). The project is being developed by One Carbon World, Climit_net, and AgrovarCC, with a focus on implementing soil preservation practices, enhancing carbon sequestration, and simultaneously reducing emissions, particularly from fertiliser use. The one-week visit involved on-site assessments and discussions with stakeholders to ensure compliance with the VCS requirements. The auditing process was carried out by Earthood, who evaluated the implementation of regenerative practices, soil management strategies, and emission reduction measures. This validation marks a significant step in recognizing the project's contribution to climate change mitigation, soil health improvement, and sustainable agricultural practices in Bulgaria. This week the UK Climate Change Committee (CCC) published its report on the recommended seventh carbon budget for the UK. The Climate Change Act (2008) provides the legislative framework for achieving net zero through the delivery of legally-binding carbon budgets which provide a limit on carbon which can be emitted during a set timeframe. These budgets provide clear, evidence-based pathways for supporting the UK achieve its 2050 net zero target, by aligning with the latest developments in technology, science, economic evidence and stakeholder engagement. It was a pleasure to welcome Faye O'Connor OBE from One Carbon World to the farm to discuss the work we have done together over the last six years on our #carbonneutral status. We talked how our LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) farming principles are the basis of everything we do on the farm, to give a whole farm, holistic approach of growing healthy, nutritious crops and the wider sustainable and biodiversity benefits of good farming practices. We also discussed the ongoing research into the future of carbon sequestration measurement and modelling, with the aim to look at verifiable carbon insetting as well as carbon emissions. There is so much more to learn and achieve, along with Andrew Bowen and the rest of his team. I enjoyed showing Faye our crops and soils, which despite the time of year, were in good condition, with a healthy structure, and plenty of worms. I was particularly pleased with this wheat plant, showing excellent root structure working hard to pump #rootexudates into the soil, locking #carbon away through #sequestration. This is all part of the work Stuart Tabernor is doing through our #biological #nutrition trials. My ultimate aim is simple. To produce #healthy, #nutitious #food from healthy soils, with minimum carbon emissions and maximum #biodiversity and #sustainable gains.

Championing Sustainability in Construction:?CLIC Our Alan O'Rourke had a fantastic time at today’s College Local Innovation Centres (CLIC) event, where we were inspired by the outstanding presentations from Morgan Sindall Construction and Lochlie Construction Group on their innovative approaches to sustainability and supply chain management. It was great to see such a diverse representation from across the construction industry and the prominence given to carbon reduction within our sector. At H&K, we’re proud to be certified carbon neutral through One Carbon World, a reflection of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions. It’s encouraging to see so many others in our sector making their own strides toward a greener future.

The decision by the United States to withdraw from the #ParisAgreement serves as a stark reminder of the challenges in building and maintaining global consensus on #ClimateAction - at a time when unified action is most urgently needed. But while this withdrawal reflects a shift in the political priorities of a key stakeholder, it does not negate the broader global transition towards a cleaner energy future. Progress is being driven not only by governments but increasingly by businesses, communities, and individuals determined to innovate and lead where policy may falter. Defying most predictions, renewable energy continues to surge globally, powered by technological advancements, falling costs, and growing consumer demand. Solar and wind energy are now often more cost-effective than fossil fuels in many regions, demonstrating that economic and environmental goals can align. This trend underscores the resilience of market forces and the determination of those committed to sustainable progress. The leadership of non-governmental actors has become indispensable. Organisations, communities, and individuals alike are called to rise to the challenge, embracing their roles in reducing emissions and innovating solutions to combat climate change. Initiatives such as carbon footprint assessments, energy efficiency measures, and nature-based solutions, including reforestation and habitat restoration, are critical steps toward achieving net zero. As António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, has stated, climate change is the defining challenge of our time. Political shifts may slow progress, but they cannot erase the determination of a global movement committed to climate action. The responsibility to act lies with all of us, and every effort—no matter how small—contributes to a more sustainable and resilient future. We at One Carbon World believe that what we do today matters more than ever. We stand ready to support anyone who needs help or advice on that journey.

Like many, I was dismayed to see the USA pull out of the #Paris Climate accord this week. This is neither a surprise, nor the first time we've been here. But it emphasises the importance of #climateaction by those outside government, as well as inside. The World Meteorological Society has reported that 2024 was the warmest year on record, reaching 1.55 degrees centigrade above pre-industrial levels. So what can we do? 1. Measure how much we contribute to the problem. My organisation, #OneCarbonWorld, helps others do this in a robust, scientific way at scale. But anyone can estimate at an individual level. I try to think about every car and plane journey, every new purchase, every appliance and radiator I use. All are responsible for generating some CO2 emissions. And I can roughly estimate their use. 2. Reduce our emissions. Even one car journey not taken - because you or I got the bus, walked, cycled, or cadged a lift - makes a difference. I try to swap a holiday for a staycation every once in a while. Buy some things secondhand (shout out to the British Heart Foundation for my lovely new/old oak dining table, and the friendly Ipswich couple for my secondhand electric car). Turn off all my appliances rather than leave them on standby every night. Some of these actions have co-benefits - my physical and mental health is nurtured by walking/cycling and by supporting charities; and many of these actions save ￡￡￡. I'm also looking to invest in solar panels too - could you light or heat your home differently or more efficiently? 3. Encourage others to reduce their emissions. Can/do you ask what your savings are invested in? Look at clothing labels to buy natural fibres? Buy more local and plastic-free - even in big supermarkets? Our money talks. It is in my view the most effective way individuals bring pressure for change. Re-use is even better than recycle - and vintage is always a good look. 4. Increase carbon sequestration. Easier for those involved in land management or agriculture, true, but could you plant a tree, have more plants around your home, let your grass grow long and adopt a "meadow" look? Could you support local woodland, wetland or peatland projects - with money or time? Or ask your local authority or relevant organisations for more of these projects? As #UN Secretary General Guterres has said, climate change is the existential challenge of our time. Responding to recent climate news with criticism and concern is understandable. The enormity of the challenge, and its seemingly relentless advance (2024 has smashed through the totemic milestone of 1.5 degrees) can make me feel like a rabbit caught in headlights. But lamenting others' inaction, whilst failing to act myself, is no solution. Great thinkers from Plato onwards have spoken of the dangers of apathy. So I'll strive to heed their advice, and to follow that of Gandhi to "Be the change you wish to see in the world". What we do matters. Perhaps even more today.
