It's hard for me to put into words what it felt like to have our OncoveryCare team together for our offsite last week. The best I can come up with: I just feel incredibly lucky. Building the future of cancer survivorship care takes a village. And while our village does a wonderful job connecting from all corners of the country—there is still something special about getting folks together in one room! Grateful, too, for our incredible speakers and dear friends of Oncovery: Payal Agrawal Divakaran, Roy Rosin, Eli P. B. Darnell, MD, and Robin Newman, OTD, OTR, FAOTA, who brought so many new and exciting ideas for our team to dig into. Can't wait for the next one ...

?? What's new in cancer survivorship??? I hope all are having good starts to 2025. There has been some very interesting coverage of cancer survivorship across the media recently, so wanted to share a few here that stuck out to me (including all links in the comments below): - First and foremost, if you haven't come across NPR's new series on survivorship - "Life, after diagnosis" - it's great. There have been a variety of good listens/reads on here, including an interview (linked in comments) with journalist Yuki Noguchi, who's been leading the series. - A study in American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO)'s JCO Oncology Practice found that less than a quarter of breast cancer survivors (22.4%) transitioned back to PCP-led care 5+ years after diagnosis, and delves into the areas (short- and late-effects of treatment, behavioral health, etc.) that are still underserved in the survivorship phase. - Our very own Founding Team Member & survivor Natasha Steele, MD, MPH published an incredibly powerful essay in Stanford University Medicine Magazine called "The art of kintsugi: together, two physicians find life lessons at its edge." I won't spoil the read for you - it's beautiful. - For any Mel Robbins fans: one of her recent podcast episodes on stress & anxiety, featuring Aditi Nerurkar, MD, MPH, delves directly into the mental health challenges that stem from finishing cancer treatment and transitioning back into "normal life." - Finally, two of my favorite podcast hosts -- Howard Forman & Harlan Krumholz -- tackled the systems-level challenges of a growing population of cancer survivors in their "Health & Veritas" podcast.

Cancer survivorship is often portrayed as a triumphant experience, focusing on recovery and the visible signs of healing. However, beneath that surface, survivors can experience a variety of physical, emotional, and social challenges that can be just as difficult to manage as the treatment itself. The Cancer Survivorship Iceberg is a powerful metaphor for these hidden struggles, reminding us that there’s more to the story than what meets the eye.?? Our survivor team at OncoveryCare put together our own Survivorship Iceberg and included examples of some of the things people saw on the surface, but what was also going on for us at different times that people couldn’t see! What was above and below the surface in your iceberg? Send us your thoughts from your own experience - we are always learning from the different perspectives of our own community.
