March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in the United States, a designation recognized by Congress since 2000. Colorectal cancer is the third most common non-skin cancer and a leading cause of cancer deaths among individuals under 50. Data collected by Oncology Data Specialists in facilities accredited by the Commission on Cancer and reported to the National Cancer Database provides important statistics regarding the rise in colon cancer diagnoses among younger age groups. For example, cases among adults aged 18-44 have increased by 14.6% since 2004, while cases among adults aged 45-55 rose by 3% from 2004-2021. In contrast, although the risk of colon cancer is higher in older adults (ages 56 and up), there has been a 20.5% decrease in colon cancer diagnoses in this age group. Screening colonoscopy may be one of several factors contributing to the reduced rates of cancer deaths and diagnoses among older adults. February stands out as the shortest month of the year, but it is also an important time for raising awareness about cancer and prevention. February 4th is recognized annually as World Cancer Day, and the entire month is designated as National Cancer Prevention Month. Additionally, February highlights awareness for two uncommon types of cancer: gallbladder cancer and bile duct cancer. These cancers are often diagnosed at more advanced stages since they usually present few, if any, recognizable symptoms in their early stages. Risk factors for bile duct cancer include having chronic colitis, certain liver diseases, and infection with the Chinese liver fluke, a type of worm parasite. On the other hand, gallbladder cancer carries risk factors such as being female or Native American.
