At 17, U.S Grant received a nomination to attend West Point when a Cadet from Clermont County, Ohio was expelled. At 24, he fought in the Mexican-American War, experienced combat, and the brutality of war up close. At 30, Grant received orders to to sail south to Panama, move overland to the Pacific and then north to California. While in Panama, cholera struck and more than half the party died. At 32, he resigned from the Army under pressure surrounding rumors of his drinking habits. By 38 he’d tried farming and failed. He tried numerous business ventures that also failed. Eventually he was forced to work in his father’s leather shop, desperate, and in 1857 was so close to broke, he pawned his watch to afford Christmas gifts. At 39, the Civil War broke out. Grant saw his chance to serve again. At 40, he won at Fort Donelson. 41, at Vicksburg. At 42, Lincoln made him a Lt. General and at 42, Lee surrendered at Appomattox. At 46, Grant became President of the United States. Punchline: Often our response to circumstances matters more than our circumstances themselves. Often perseverance outweighs the presence of hardship or even our flaws. This week, ask yourself, am I in a period of response currently? Who you are today isn't who or what you'll will ultimately become.
