“I was very humbled to receive the 40 Under 40 in Cancer Award and to be named alongside other recipients doing such big things in oncology. Every day I feel blessed to work in this extraordinary field, helping oncology patients on their cancer journeys. As the Associate Director of Marketing for the Oncology Nurse Education Team at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, my primary role is developing and executing the oncology nurse education team strategy. Our goal is to provide nursing education to ensure the safe and effective use of our products, so patients receive maximum benefits from therapy. There is nothing sadder than a patient encountering adverse events that preclude them from completing treatment. My team focuses on improving patient outcomes by educating nurses on best practices in adverse event management. Working as a front desk receptionist in an oncology clinic after college completely changed my life trajectory. I was originally poised to attend grad school to develop drought-resistant crops, but hearing patient stories, watching their struggles, and seeing their resiliency inspired me to go to nursing school. Along the way, I was fortunate to have amazing mentors who taught me about clinical trials, treated me as a partner, believed in me, and encouraged me to be bold and confident. Attending the 40 Under 40 Award ceremony was especially exciting as it was held in my hometown of Chicago, and I was able to bring my parents. My parents don’t always understand what I do or why I work so much. The award ceremony allowed them a glimpse into that world. They were so proud of me. We got to dress up, take lots of photos, and share an extremely joyous occasion together. "I am a practicing medical oncologist in the Philippines, where I serve as the Head of Cancer Research at Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Hospital, and Associate Dean of the College of Medicine at the University of St. La Salle. In these roles, I balance my duties as a clinician, researcher, and educator. I treat persons with cancer and their families every day in the hospital where I also train medical interns and residents. I also oversee research initiatives to improve cancer care in our region. Additionally, I oversee operations and help set the strategic direction of the University of St. La Salle College of Medicine, preparing future physicians for our healthcare system's transition to Universal Health Care. Receiving the 40 Under 40 in Cancer Award was a significant honor. As the first oncologist from the Philippines to receive this award and the only 2024 awardee based outside the United States, this award acknowledges that the work I’m doing is recognized and appreciated by my peers. It highlights the global recognition of our efforts in developing countries. I hope this inspires other oncologists in the Philippines and the Asia Pacific region to continue their valuable work, knowing that we are visible to the global oncologic community. The award has also expanded my network within the broader oncology community, enhancing my ability to find creative and innovative ways to improve care for persons with cancer. Looking ahead, I plan to continue my clinical work and eventually transition into health systems and academia.
