At the HVAC Excellence Educators’ Conference, I shared a stark reality: We need to bring in *42,000* new HVAC technicians each year for the next decade to meet industry demand. With roughly 1,000 schools and union programs nationwide, that means each one needs to graduate 42 qualified techs per year—and right now, that’s not happening. The problem isn’t just enrollment; it’s how we train. Limited educators mean we must stretch their expertise further. The best way to do that? Blending online learning with hands-on classroom instruction. Digital tools can provide foundational knowledge, freeing up educators to focus on applied learning and critical problem-solving skills. But training can’t stop at graduation. Too often, employers start new techs over in apprenticeship programs because they don’t know what skills a graduate actually has. Schools need competency tracking so employers can confidently continue training, rather than restarting it. We also need stronger school-to-workforce pipelines. Schools partnering with local contractors to offer apprenticeship programs can create: ? Steady revenue for schools ? A robust earn-and-learn model for students ? Better-trained graduates who are workforce-ready from day one And let’s be clear: The market is shifting. The next generation of techs are digital natives who expect modern learning methods. Businesses that fail to adapt—think Kodak and Blockbuster—get left behind. Embracing technology isn’t optional; it’s essential. Now is the time for schools and industry leaders to rethink HVAC education. The future of our trade depends on it.
