Two days later, the energy from DHC2024 AI Summit is still running high, and my mind is racing with the conversations and ideas shared. Matthew Soskins may have captured it best when he said: "My mom always told me, if you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room." Well, I was definitely in the right room on Tuesday and Wednesday at DHC2024. What an absolute rockstar lineup of lawyers, engineers, clinicians, scientists, entrepreneurs, and patient advocates—each working on tough problems at the intersection of healthcare, law, and technology. And they didn’t just show up—they brought it. Each presentation elevated the level of discourse and urgency around how AI can be used for good in healthcare. The Nobel committee seems to think breakthroughs in AI will have far-reaching impact on society. I couldn’t agree more. But what we need now is a massive multidisciplinary effort to: 1. Understand the implications of AI for our healthcare system, 2. Shape its development, 3. Address risks, and 4. Ensure its benefits are widely shared. As Tayab Waseem MD PhD put it perfectly on Wednesday: "DHC seeks to tackle the 'last mile problem' of implementing AI in healthcare"—the really tough, yet critically important, challenge of actually applying this technology in practice in an ethical and legally responsible manner. The challenge now is moving from these two days of inspiration, education, and collaboration to concrete action on solving this “last mile problem.” After spending time with such an amazing group of speakers and attendees, I’m optimistic we’re up to the challenge. As you may have already seen, as of September 16, 2024 I have transitioned from Ogden Murphy Wallace, PLLC to begin serving as General Counsel for Overlake Medical Center & Clinics. I am very excited to join the executive team at Overlake Medical Center and the challenges and opportunities that await. It is an exciting time and I am joining an amazing team. But I would be extremely remiss not to acknowledge Ogden Murphy Wallace and all of my partners and friends there and what they mean to me. I have been with OMW for over 27 years. I started my professional career there and only become the attorney and person that I am because of those experiences. My 18 plus years of having a role in leadership at OMW has been the most rewarding experiences of my career. I would like to thank each and every team member who I have worked with over that time, for what they have done for both me and OMW. It has truly been an amazing time for me and I depart knowing I have made lifetime friends and colleagues. Thank you all and see you on the road ahead.
