Tesla announced its new #robotaxi, #Cybercab, on October 10. They demonstrated the vehicle—which most industry-watchers have described as a prototype—at Warner Brothers Studios in Los Angeles. The media attending the event, which was more party than true technology announcement, were largely skeptical since Tesla doesn’t actually have a robotaxi yet. A core early team member at Waymo and Cruise, Brad Templeton, has questioned what Tesla would actually demonstrate in his Forbes article,?Since Tesla Has No Robotaxi, Just What Will They Show On Robotaxi Day? (forbes.com). Demonstrating autonomous driving around a studio lot isn’t the same as having a fully operational fleet of robotaxis on the road. Templeton pointed out, “A working robotaxi has to travel with no supervision and do Tesla’s ‘complete drive’ accomplishment 50,000 times in a row—as Waymo does—not just a few times in a row.” Undoubtedly, Tesla’s shunning of #lidar isn’t going to do them other favors. Other automotive manufacturers that do use LiDAR, including Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America, Inc.-Benz, are making far more progress with autonomous functionality than Tesla.
