When you ask the American people about AI their #1 concern by far is jobs and job displacement, not ex-risk, AGI, model cards, or model bias. Yet there's been far too little discussion of this seismic aspect of AI in the public debate since Chat GPT burst on to the scene. It's why I welcome this important TIME piece from Xavier de Souza Briggs and Molly Kinder of The Brookings Institution to raise up this issue and prod more public discussion. Gen AI could be an augmentative boon to workers and wages, but *only* if they get a seat at the table in deciding how it rolls out. Hoping that the The Nobel Prizes just awarded to Daron Acemoglu Simon Johnson and James Robinson will call additional attention to this issue - as they raised their book Power and Progress. https://lnkd.in/eJ-V2c7d

#TBT! I’m so thankful for the gracious invitation and the incredible brunch in DC two weeks ago, hosted by Omidyar Network . It was a room filled with some of the most powerful, inspirational, and generous people I’ve ever met—people who are not just working to make the world a better place, but who are leaving a lasting mark for generations to come. The energy in the room was electric. I had the opportunity to connect with reporters, legendary leaders, influencers, business leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers, funders, and program officers. What struck me most is how important it is to curate more spaces like these. These environments allow us to form connections that might not otherwise happen. It’s in these moments, over a shared meal or a simple conversation, that the best deals are made—not always in the boardroom or over a Zoom call, but through authentic, human connections. A special shoutout to Aniyia L. Williams , Michele Lawrence Jawando , Corey S. Williams-Allen and the entire team at Omidyar Network for exemplifying what it means to create a space that fosters real, lasting impact. Grateful to Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Santa Fe Institute and American Exchange Project for gathering a multidisciplinary group to grapple with how we build “A Bigger and Better US” in our diverse yet highly sorted society. Moderated by PBS’ Judy Woodruff (“America at a Crossroads”), our panel explored promising philanthropic and cross-sector strategies — featuring colleagues Shayna Triebwasser of Hearthland Foundation and Cecilia Conrad of Lever for Change alongside our efforts at the nexus of culture and technology at Omidyar Network. As Andrew Lo closed in reflection, this is one of those areas where you truly need different perspectives from across research and practice to grasp what’s happening, why, and how we can move forward in a spirit of bold collaboration.
