Traveling in Detroit is getting safer! ?? The Detroit Mobility Optimization through Data for Equity and Safety project and initiative (MODES) aims to reduce traffic fatalities and enhance transportation safety and operations equity for #Detroiters, making our streets safer and helping people move more effectively across our neighborhoods. The Office of Mobility Innovation at The City of Detroit received a $2 million award for this effort. So, how does this benefit residents and visitors? ?? MODES will deploy state-of-the-art infrastructure to create a series of twenty-two smart intersections across Detroit. These intersections will utilize existing traffic signal technologies already deployed throughout the City paired with other contextual data and analytics, such as weather and roadway conditions, to optimize solutions that detect crash patterns and prevent traffic accidents, helping to save lives on our roads! Each smart intersection will evaluate traffic information to address the challenges of road safety in the City by quantifying: ?? Fatal or minor car accidents? ?? Near-miss incidents? ?? Pedestrian safety issues ?? Traffic flow? ?? Predictions of where traffic incidents are likely to occur This system will have additional safety insights and visualizations available, on a city-wide scale, to be evaluated by City staff to improve equitable decision-making, provide real-time support of crash locations, and help residents and visitors get to their destinations safely around our City! Deployment will focus on intersections in historically disadvantaged communities and at locations that are optimal for traffic safety enhancements?? increasing the equitable impact traffic safety could have on a community. Scaling with additional smart intersection locations and additional capability enhancements will be possible after the end of this phase through additional potential funding made available through the second stage of the USDOT SMART grant. Devin is a proud graduate of Michigan State University, with a B.A. in Public Policy and a minor in Law and Justice. Recently, Devin completed the Mayoral Fellowship, where he contributed to sustainability initiatives.
