关于我们
The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) tells the many stories that comprise California, creating the space and context for greater connection, trust, and understanding between people. Through its inclusive exhibitions, public programs, educational initiatives, and cultural events, OMCA brings Californians together and inspires greater understanding about what our state’s art, history, and natural surroundings teach us about ourselves and each other. With more than 1.9 million objects, OMCA brings together its multi-disciplinary collections of art, history, and natural science with the first-person accounts and often untold narratives of California, all within its 110,000 square feet of gallery space and seven-acre campus. OMCA is a leading cultural institution of the Bay Area and a resource for the research and understanding of California's dynamic cultural and environmental heritage for visitors from the region, the state, and around the world.

“I feel that these veterans deserve all the respect we can give them.”- Dugan Aguilar Dugan Aguilar used the word “Hudessi” - Maidu for “brave man” or “special man” - to describe Native war veterans. His father and uncles served in the military during World War II, and Dugan himself served as a marine in the Vietnam War. Dugan attended the Susanville Indian Veterans Reunion for many years, where he crafted portraits of generations of Native veterans. This reunion was one of the few all-Native veteran reunions in the country, where Dugan was the only photographer invited to create images of Hudessi. Veterans get special discounted tickets at OMCA! Come see our newest exhibition, Born of The Bear Dance: Dugan Aguilar’s Photographs of Native California now on view in our Great Hall. https://lnkd.in/gb-FD6Pm #OMCA #DuganAguilar #NativeCalifornia #VeteransDay ??: Dugan Aguilar, Untitled (Self Portrait with Fellow Hudessi, Veterans Memorial Building, Susanville) Circa 1990s, Reproduction of gelatin silver print, Collection of the Oakland Museum of California. Our Senior Director of Learning, Experience, and Programming, Mary Ann Bonet Guardia,?was recently interviewed on?Kron4?with anchor Stephanie Lin about OMCA’s Día de los Muertos 30th Annual Community Celebration?this past Sunday! In 1994, a small group of visionary artists and community members in Oakland approached OMCA to organize the museum’s first community-based Día de los Muertos celebration. The first celebration planted a seed and linked a living tradition that uplifts a deep indigenous way of recognizing those who came before us to connect and reconnect our communities with our ancestors and ancestral ways of being. If you're having #FOMO about?missing our 30th Annual Dia de los Muertos community celebration, don't worry we still have an offering for you.?With Día de los Angelitos traditions in mind, the Día de los Muertos Committee of the Oakland Museum of California created a public ofrenda to express the feelings of anguish and compassion for the loss of countless young lives. Please check out the ofrenda in the Lower Level while it’s on view through December 1 and add the name of a loved one to the butterfly interactive! #DíadelosAngelitos?#DiadelosMuertos #Ofrenda #OMCA #Oakland https://lnkd.in/g4W5sKh9
