We are in Washington, DC, for #ASLA2024! On Sunday morning, we co-hosted "Looking Back/Looking Forward: Celebrating and Adapting the Olmsted Legacy in Washington, DC" with our partners at Friends of Fairsted and Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site. We had an amazing time visiting The White House and The US Capitol grounds. Thanks to our session sponsors at APE Original Studio and our friends at the US Capitol Historical Society, BSLA Office, Sasaki and American Society of Landscape Architects. Yesterday, we set up shop in the ASLA Pavilion on the expo floor so that attendees could learn about Frederick Law Olmsted and the Olmsted firm, register for our upcoming group travel trip to Buffalo on Oct 30-Nov 1, grab a brochure on the US Capitol, enter-to-win tickets to Biltmore and more. Our 7-foot-tall Frederick Law Olmsted mascot— Big Head Fred— made his first appearance at last night's 125 ASLA Anniversary Celebration by Land F/X, and he's been out on the expo floor several times today.

关于我们
The Olmsted Network—?formerly the National Association for Olmsted Parks— was established in 1980 as a diverse coalition dedicated to preserving the living legacy of Frederick Law Olmsted and the Olmsted firm. Over the last 40 years, we have helped foster park conservancies, friends’ groups and citizen volunteers to preserve their neighborhood parks and landscapes. We have created a permanent record thanks to the groundbreaking scholarship of Charles E. Beveridge, series editor of the Papers of Frederick Law Olmsted. We have raised awareness through educational outreach, conferences and timely publications, and we have engaged in rapid response advocacy across the country. In 2020, we took on a new role as managing partner of Olmsted 200, the Olmsted bicentennial, partnering with nine national organizations. We joined with policymakers, public health professionals, community leaders and citizen activists to explore the many ways Olmsted’s values are relevant to 21st-century challenges. The Olmsted Network is the first and only national organization dedicated to preserving the Olmsted legacy by providing the advocacy, research and education needed to protect, renew and maintain these exemplary parks and landscapes.

We're still flying high from our 2024 annual conference in New York's Hudson River Valley a few weeks ago! Did you miss it? Watch the keynotes and panel discussions here: https://bit.ly/4drY63R
Honored to speak on the health benefits of parks and greenspace at the Olmsted Network conference today, joined by Vassar College president Elizabeth Bradley, Trinity University professor Susan Masino, and Hartford Hospital Institute of Living psychiatrist Harold Schwartz. Parks promote health through many pathways--nature contact, physical activity, social connections, climate resilience, and more. Park equity = health equity. Gratifying to meet many colleagues at the conference who have used Trust for Public Land data and maps, or collaborated with TPL on projects across the US.

Next Tuesday's webinar— Conversations with Olmsted: Exploring Olmsted Through Art—?will feature four exciting panelists. Let's meet them: The New York Times photographer Ruth Fremson will moderate this discussion and explore the creation of "Olmsted’s Enduring Gift," a special photo essay she compiled for Olmsted’s 200th?birthday in 2022. She also wrote?"An Assignment I Needed: Frederick Law Olmsted’s Legacy." Jane Loeffler is an architectural historian turned painter. In 1972, she curated an exhibition on Olmsted for the National Gallery of Art. It was the first time that the Gallery exhibited landscape plans as works of art and included its first-ever multi-media presentation. Author and landscape architect critic Gary Hilderbrand is a longtime professor at Harvard University Graduate School of Design and a founding principal of Reed Hilderbrand LLC Landscape Architecture in Cambridge, MA. His firm has worked on many notable projects, including the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University. Anita Morson-Matra is an urban planner and the Director of Community Partnerships for Emerald Necklace Conservancy, where she uses her skills in social justice and public health programming to make the parks better for everyone. As an artist herself, it's no surprise that WBUR 90.9 FM named her 1 of 15 artists and creatives changing the cultural landscape in Boston. Register for free today: https://ow.ly/Z7Zn50SUSh4

New on the Olmsted Trail! ?? Dunn Gardens, situated just north of Seattle, WA, was originally the country estate of Arthur and Jeannette Dunn. The summer home was designed by Olmsted Brothers in 1916. Firm member James Frederick Dawson embraced the beauty of the place, creating a landscape that offered curving paths and incredible views of the Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. Native conifers and eastern hardwoods, coupled with sweeping lawns, embodied the Olmsted philosophy of designing with nature. In 1993, the E.B. Dunn Historic Garden Trust was created to open the place up for public enjoyment. The property is a Washington State Landmark and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
