?? Happy New Year from OliveBio! ?? With 2025 peeking around the corner, we are getting sentimental... We are proud of the milestones achieved, the partnerships forged, and the progress made toward a more sustainable future in 2024. ??? It is incredible to think that a little over a year ago, OliveBio was just an idea with some paperwork behind it. Over the past year, we have: ? Formed a great team ? Combined molecular biology, biochemistry, computer science, and mechanical and electrical engineering to create our first PHA manufacturing system prototype. This journey took place at our favorite BioLabs at The Lundquist Institute —and, in true startup fashion, in someone’s garage! ? Bought our first 'big ticket' lab equipment items (thanks Wasatch Photonics and Q Magnetics) ? Got our first Letter of Intent (LOI) for purchase of our product! It has been incredibly exciting to see a whirlwind of ideas, successes and (educational) failures come together to shape what OliveBio is becoming. The recent conclusion of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee's fifth session (INC-5) in Busan, South Korea, marked a pivotal moment in the global effort to combat plastic pollution. Despite the lack of a finalized treaty, the international community is dedicated to addressing this critical issue. Here are the 5 key takeaways from INC-5: ?? Negotiations will continue in 2025 ?? Lack of agreement on limiting petrochemical plastics production - a measure supported by 100 countries and opposed by oil-producing nations ?? Broad agreement around creating a binding treaty focused on phasing out harmful chemicals in plastics ?? Tackling ocean plastic pollution is becoming a more prominent focus area ?? Action needs to be taken to address the needs of frontline communities who are at an increased risk of negative health outcomes due to proximity to plastics manufacturing facilities ?? ?? Driving Real Solutions to Plastic Waste: PHA in Focus ?? Our company is committed to finding actionable solutions in the fight against plastic waste, with PHAs playing a central role in this mission. A recent paper by Koller and Mukherjee underscores why PHAs are a game-changer and should be an integral part of that fight. With only 9% of petrochemical plastics currently being recycled, 12% incinerated, and 79% dumped in the environment, it is easy to see why focusing on recycling alone is not going to solve the plastic pollution problem.?Barring a rapid and fundamental shift in human behavior and recycling technologies, we need alternatives to traditional plastics that can decompose in soil, landfills, salt water, and freshwater. PHAs are among the very few materials that can do that.
