As we close out Filipino American History Month, we wanted to share how we incorporated that history in Work It Out Wombats! In the episode Treeborhood Album, we learn how JunJun’s family home gets to be in the Treeborhood. After a great storm, Amado’s lolo Alejandro built the house. Dr. Darlene Marie Mortel Edouard, PhD worked with the writer, Sherri Stoner, and Pipeline Studios to make sure that the story and photo reflected the Filipino migrants workers, our Manongs, who came to the United States in the 1920s and 30s. Using photos taken of the Manongs and Filipino labor heroes Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz, we crafted Lolo Alejandro to look like them. Because it matters that we include our history in our present so we can make a better future. Happy Filipino American History Month! #WombatsPBS #FilAmHistoryMonth #FAHM #RepresentationMatters #LarryItliong #PhilipVeraCruz #Manongs #FAHNS

Another fun stop motion short created by Dr. Kareem Edouard's student Derrick Banks Jr. at The ILLEST Lab!
Assistant Professor at Drexel University, Creative Producer on Work It Out Wombats!, Children's Media Advisor and Consultant at Ole Greens Group LLC
Let Black Boys just play! Have fun. Be their authentic selves! Let them COOK! Derrick Banks Jr. leads our Black Male Animation Lab by finding the vintage toy sets, designing movement sequences, shooting the animation, and editing the final protype videos. Throughout the project, participants used computational and narrative STEM tools—cameras, software, and lighting—while integrating storytelling that reflected their cultural experiences. This experience fostered both technical skills and leadership, allowing them to see themselves as STEM leaders and narrative creators. The ILLEST Lab is all about merging STEM with creative expression. #STEM #CreativeLeadership #BlackBoysInSTEM #ILLab #Animation

Did you know that on PBS KIDS there so many different ways to see Filipinos? You can watch Jelly, Ben, and Pogo shorts and play their games on PBS KIDS! You can also watch TJ the muppet on Sesame Street. And of course, there’s our very own Philippine Eagle family on Work it Out Wombats! Which characters have you seen and do you have a favorite? We love them all!?#WombatsPBS?#Sesamestreet?#jellybenandpogo?#pbskids?#FilAmHistoryMonth?#FAHM?#RepresentationMatters

This week on our Instagram, we met JunJun! He loves to play guitar and uses music to express himself to the world. Here’s a little known fact. He is actually Amado Junior! Many Filipino names get shortened and doubled for nicknames, so Junior becomes JunJun! Any of you have a doubled name or a JunJun in your family? Did you know that the image on JunJun’s shirt is the sun on the Philippine flag? We know it is important to include little details that immediately signal to viewers that JunJun and his family are Filipino. And what better way than to have the Philippine sun on JunJun’s shirt? #WombatsPBS #FilAmHistoryMonth #FAHM #RepresentationMatters

Dr. Kareem Edouard is attending the Television Academy Foundation’s Media Educators Conference this week!
Assistant Professor at Drexel University, Creative Producer on Work It Out Wombats!, Children's Media Advisor and Consultant at Ole Greens Group LLC
I’ve spent 15 years directing commercials and music videos. Now, I creative produce the early childhood show Work It Out Wombats! on PBS Kids. My research focuses on the intersection of culturally responsive design in digital media, storytelling, and the creation of STEM learning environments, particularly in informal settings. Despite this work, I’m still one of the few Black men navigating these spaces. That’s why building the Black Male Animation Studio in the The ILLEST Lab Lab is so important.

It's Filipino American History Month! So we're going to post about how Work It Out Wombats shares Filipino culture on the show. Meet JunJun, Kaya, Amado and Gabriela. They are not just any bird, they are Philippine Eagles, the national bird of the Philippines! Unlike the eagles we know in the United States, the Philippine eagle has a large mane-like crest. JunJun, Kaya, their dad Amado, and Lola Gabriela live together in a multigenerational household. In the next few weeks, we’ll meet each member of this family and learn more about them and their life in the Treeborhood so stay tuned and keep coming back! #WombatsPBS #FilAmHistoryMonth #RepresentationMatters
