Anyone else in the mood for some summertime sadness? If so, we’ve got some books to make you bawl. These books wrecked us - in all the right ways! Ally: I recently read and loved Safekeeping by Abigal Thomas. A moving memoir told in snippets of text looking back on love, loss, and a life well lived. Cate: While I'm not sure a book has ever actually made me cry, The Reformatory by Tananarive Due was so good but really hurt my heart! Leah: Though not really a sad book overall The Ex Vows by Jessica Joy made me cry! Melissa: Sipsworth by Simon Van Booy. Yes, I cried over the beauty of an old woman's relationship with a mouse and I'm not ashamed to say it.

An insider tip on getting kids reading this end of summer, from our kids book buyer Melissa: "We used to only stock scary stories around Halloween, but our young readers are increasingly coming in and asking for them all year round. At a time when kids are seeking escapist reads, horror has become the fastest growing genre in kid lit! With our new expanded kids space opening this fall, we’ll be leaning into horror—both the sweetly spooky and the legitimately creepy—but I’ve also got something to scratch that itch right now: Signed copies of R.L. Stine’s newest novel Shark Night (ages 8-12) are back in store now. Our first shipment flew out the door! One of the best things about being the owner of a small independent bookstore is how nosy I get to be about what people are reading. I get to strike up conversations with strangers at the new release table, browse what’s coming in as special orders, and - best of all - eavesdrop on what our brilliant team of booksellers is reading and buzzing about! Highlight of my week: A letter arrived in the mail. It got lost among some catalogues, invoices, and junk mail. I found it just recently, hidden behind a stack of books in the office. The envelope was addressed in slightly wobbly but neat handwriting. Inside? A typed up, perfectly formatted, professional note from … a sixth grader? It turns out a student from a local school here in Alexandria decided his mom needed a gift card from my bookstore for Mothers Day. He asked - kindly, politely, directly - if I would send him one for her? She is such a good mom. He wants to do something special for her. The note was sweet and persuasive - of course I sent the gift card! (Along with a few books for the letter writer to read this summer.)
