Interpreting and Preserving Old North Church & Historic Site
关于我们
Old North Illuminated is a secular, independent nonprofit that educates and inspires diverse audiences through its work interpreting and preserving Boston’s Old North Church, an iconic landmark of the American Revolution. Established in 1991 as the Old North Foundation, Old North Illuminated shines an analytical light on the past in an effort to build a brighter future. Just as two patriots hung lanterns in our steeple on the night of April 18, 1775, as a signal to spark action, we seek to ignite active citizenship by engaging visitors and classrooms in the rich history of the Old North Church. Old North’s 300-year history illuminates shifts and arcs in American society that reveal an essential ingredient in the work of building a more perfect union: courageous and compassionate leadership.

Old North Church & Historic Site is a proud partner of the National Park Service and Boston National Historical Park. Our colleagues at NPS are dedicated, tireless, and passionate in their efforts to share American history, protect America’s historical and cultural assets, and maintain public access to National Historic Landmarks like Old North Church. We rely on our NPS colleagues’ expertise and support throughout the year. For example, NPS preservation experts offer funding and project management services on projects like our recent crypt restoration. NPS rangers respond to emergencies and provide us with training to help keep our campus safe and secure. NPS staff foster collaborative educational programming across the park partners for the benefit of both teachers and students. And rangers help visitors and locals alike explore the rich history of our nation’s founding. Additionally, we are currently working through multiple capital/preservation projects that were awarded National Park Service grants in 2024. After losing access to these funds from January 28 to February 1, we are concerned about the stability of this funding because once we sign contracts and begin construction, we do not have reserves to cover the costs if these grants are taken away again. We are deeply concerned about the impact layoffs at the National Park Service will have on Boston's ability to maximize tourism and deliver a positive experience to families traveling from around the country to commemorate the 250th anniversaries of Paul Revere’s lantern signal and midnight ride, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. National parks exist for all Americans. The park service cares for iconic sites such as Old North Church, Independence Hall, and the Yorktown Battlefield, preserving them for future generations. If our parks continue to be understaffed and underfunded, particularly as we celebrate so many important milestones related to the American Revolution, everyone will lose.

Join the award-winning journalist and historian Colin Woodard on Zoom for a special discussion about his celebrated book American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America. In this thought-provoking book, Woodard argues that North America is actually made up of eleven distinct nations, each with its own unique historical roots. American Nations takes readers on a journey through the history of our fractured continent, offering a revolutionary and revelatory take on American identity, and how the conflicts between them have shaped our past and continue to mold our future. From the Deep South to the Far West, to Yankeedom to El Norte, Woodard reveals how each region continues to uphold its distinguishing ideals and identities today, with results that can be seen in the current political landscape.

We are thrilled to announce we have been selected to participate in the Bloomberg Philanthropies Digital Accelerator! This program helps nonprofit cultural organizations like ours invest in essential digital infrastructure. Through the Digital Accelerator, we will redesign our website to make it easier for global visitors to plan their trip to Boston and for history teachers and students to access our educational resources and videos. A huge thank you to Bloomberg Philanthropies for this important support!?
