Until then, BCCI used to pay Doordarshan to air matches—so the idea of getting paid for TV rights was unheard of! With no clue what to charge, they asked South Africa to make an offer. South African TV casually proposed $30K. BCCI, trying to negotiate, countered with $40K, which was instantly accepted. But here’s the twist: When the South African team landed in Kolkata, an official handed over a check for $120K! Turns out, South African TV had meant $40K per match, not in total. ??
