Movies and Museums: A Perfect Summer Combo! This summer, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art brought a touch of Hollywood glamour to the heart of Oklahoma with a stunning exhibition: Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer. If you’re not familiar with Edith Head, get ready to be impressed. She’s the legendary costume designer behind over 400 films, with 35 Oscar nominations (and 8 wins!) to her name. She was so iconic that Pixar used her as the inspiration for Edna Mode in The Incredibles. The exhibit highlighted many of Head’s most famous designs, but what made it truly unique was the museum’s weekend film series. Each weekend, visitors could not only marvel at costumes worn by stars like Grace Kelly but also catch the very movies in which these costumes appeared. Kudos to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art for curating an immersive and engaging experience!

A solid design process is what creates lasting legacies. This past weekend, my husband and I toured the Edith Head exhibit at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. While admiring the iconic dresses that graced the silver screen, I found myself most captivated by her meticulous process. It reminded me of the way we approach design in our own work. Edith’s process was thorough and thoughtful. Every detail mattered: ?? Study the period. ?? Research what the character would authentically wear. ?? Collaborate with the actors to understand their interpretation of the character. ?? Balance historical accuracy with a sense of modernity. ?? Consider how fabric reacts to the set, lighting, and camera angles. ?? Evaluate how the costume will read on screen, leading to her signature dark glasses, which helped her visualize fabric contrast in black-and-white films. Her attention to these nuances earned her 35 Academy Award nominations and 8 wins—an unparalleled legacy in costume design. As a designer myself, I can relate to her commitment to solving complex problems with creativity. When you combine big challenges with constraints, that’s when the magic happens. Edith bottled that magic and built a career around it, one that still inspires.

As lifelong film lovers, partnering with the Oklahoma City Museum of Art to produce a mini-documentary on one of Hollywood’s most iconic costume designers was an absolute dream. Edith Head’s work defined the Golden Age of Hollywood, and recreating a classic costume workshop right here in our own studio felt like a perfect homage to her legacy. It was an interesting challenge to capture the magic of her career—working with archival footage and concept sketches and bringing together Oklahoma designers and historians to share their insights and reflect on Head's influence. We hope the resulting project gave audiences a glimpse into her genius. If you haven’t already, visit OKCMOA today for one last chance to experience this brilliant exhibit and dive into Hollywood’s golden age right here in OKC. The exhibit closes on 9/29. Does your organization have a story to tell? Prairie Surf Creative can bring it from sketch to screen. https://lnkd.in/gvFuKuCh
